Fix MSFS 2024 multiplayer not working by checking online switches, server region, player mode, privacy, cross-play, account and network settings.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 multiplayer usually fails because Online Functionality or multiplayer is disabled, friends are connected to different regional servers or player modes, platform privacy blocks online play, or the service is unavailable. Sign in first, match the session settings, then test the network before reinstalling anything.
How do I fix MSFS 2024 multiplayer?
Work through these checks in order, testing with one friend after each change rather than altering everything at once.
- Confirm that your simulator profile is online. Make sure Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 shows the expected Microsoft account and is not running in an offline state. Install any offered simulator and platform gaming-service updates; players on mismatched builds may be unable to join the same group.
- Enable Online Functionality. Open the general online settings and turn on Online Functionality. If your platform or build presents a separate Multiplayer switch, enable that too, exit the settings normally and restart the simulator. Our explanation of what the Online Functionality master switch controls covers the other services that disappear when it is off.
- Select the same regional server. In the online or profile panel, both players should choose the same server region. Selecting the lowest-ping server independently can place friends on different servers even though they are at the same airport.
- Match the player visibility mode. For diagnosis, use All Players rather than Live Players where that choice is available. Live Players is more restrictive and can exclude pilots whose live time, weather or session conditions do not match.
- Create or join the same group. Send an invitation through the simulator's social panel and verify that it was accepted. Test in Free Flight, spawn at the same airport on separate parking stands, and wait until both aircraft have entered the world. Career missions are not shared group flights, and choosing the exact same stand can leave aircraft overlapping or apparently missing.
- Check platform privacy and cross-network play. The account must be permitted to join multiplayer games. Family or child accounts may need an adult to allow multiplayer and cross-network communication. On Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5/PS5 Pro, also confirm that the console profile has the online multiplayer access required by that platform.
- Rule out a local network problem. Restart the simulator and router, disable any VPN or proxy temporarily, and allow the simulator plus its platform gaming services through the firewall. Check that an in-simulator data limit has not disabled online services; our guide to MSFS 2024 data limits and bandwidth controls explains the relevant settings. Avoid opening random ports unless a specific platform diagnostic identifies a NAT problem.
Why can I see other players but not my friend?
If strangers are visible, the basic multiplayer connection is working; the fault is usually the server, visibility mode, group state or your friend's platform privacy.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer is greyed out | Offline profile, disabled Online Functionality or account restriction | Sign in, enable online services and review platform privacy |
| Strangers appear but a friend does not | Different server or player mode | Match the regional server, choose All Players and re-form the group |
| Friend is in the group but absent at the airport | Not fully spawned, Career mode or overlapping stands | Use Free Flight and enter the world from separate parking positions |
| Aircraft appears with the wrong model or livery | Local aircraft package or model matching | No connection fix is needed; the multiplayer aircraft is already present |
| Multiplayer, live weather and streamed scenery all fail | Master online switch, authentication, data limit or service interruption | Check the online settings and account before changing traffic options |
Normal multiplayer also does not automatically place two users in one aeroplane or synchronise their controls. Each pilot should spawn separately; see our explanation of same-aircraft and shared-cockpit flying in MSFS 2024 if that is what you are trying to arrange.
Is live traffic the same as multiplayer?
No. Multiplayer displays aircraft flown by other simmers, while Live Traffic injects aircraft based on real-world traffic data. Human-controlled aircraft can work while Live Traffic is empty, or the reverse; if only injected traffic is missing, troubleshoot the Live Traffic service separately.
Should I remove add-ons or reinstall MSFS 2024?
Reinstallation should be the last step because it rarely repairs an account, server-selection or privacy problem. Clearing the rolling cache is also a scenery fix, not a multiplayer authentication fix.
On PC, temporarily move third-party Community packages out only if multiplayer stopped after installing an add-on. Traffic injectors can change which aircraft are drawn, while map, weather or network utilities can interfere with online requests. Do not remove official packages; restore add-ons in small groups once a clean Free Flight test works.
