How do you test whether your PC can run SteamVR?

To test whether your PC can run SteamVR, check the headset’s CPU, GPU, operating-system and connection requirements, install SteamVR and any required headset software, then run a representative VR application while monitoring frame timing. Reaching SteamVR Home only confirms that the runtime starts; it does not prove smooth performance.

How do you run a meaningful SteamVR compatibility test?

The dependable method combines a hardware check, a successful headset connection and a performance test using the application you intend to run. For general PC VR use, especially flight simulation, no single compatibility score covers all three.

  1. Identify how the headset connects. A native PC headset may require a DisplayPort or HDMI connection plus USB, while a standalone headset streams compressed video over USB or Wi-Fi.   2. Compare the actual hardware. Use Windows Task Manager’s Performance tab or dxdiag to identify the CPU, dedicated GPU, memory and driver.   3. Verify the physical connection. Plug a display-connected headset into the graphics card rather than the motherboard. On a laptop, confirm that the required HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C display output is wired to the dedicated GPU; a USB-C socket does not automatically support DisplayPort Alt Mode or the headset’s required signal.
  4. Install and launch the whole software chain. Install SteamVR, a supported graphics driver and the headset manufacturer’s PC runtime where one is required. Legacy Windows Mixed Reality headsets also depend on Microsoft’s headset platform, which newer Windows installations may not provide; SteamVR by itself cannot drive them.
  5. Establish a controlled baseline. Start with the headset’s normal refresh rate and set SteamVR’s per-application render resolution to a fixed 100% rather than automatic scaling. Disable additional supersampling until the baseline works, because SteamVR resolution and an application’s own render scale can stack together.
  6. Test a representative workload. First confirm stable tracking and display output in the SteamVR environment, then run the actual simulator or another comparably demanding VR application. Open SteamVR’s frame-timing or performance graph and test long enough for the PC to reach normal operating temperature; laptops should be connected to mains power.

What counts as a SteamVR test pass?

A proper pass means the headset remains connected and tracked while both CPU and GPU frame times stay within the selected refresh-rate budget during a realistic workload.

The frame budget is about 13.9 milliseconds at 72 Hz, 12.5 milliseconds at 80 Hz, 11.1 milliseconds at 90 Hz and 8.3 milliseconds at 120 Hz. Stable half-rate reprojection can be usable in a seated flight simulator, but it should not be mistaken for native-refresh performance.

Is the old SteamVR Performance Test reliable?

Valve’s older SteamVR Performance Test is not a reliable pass-or-fail test for a modern headset or flight simulator. Its fixed workload was designed around early PC VR hardware and does not reproduce modern headset resolutions, demanding simulation code, wireless encoding or the connection between a laptop’s ports and its dedicated GPU.

If you still have access to that benchmark, treat its result only as a rough historical baseline. Testing through the real headset and intended application provides far more useful evidence.

Why can SteamVR run while a flight simulator stutters?

SteamVR’s empty environment is much lighter than a detailed cockpit, busy airport or complex combat mission, so a PC can pass the connection test and still be too slow for the simulator.

  • High GPU time: reduce SteamVR resolution, in-simulator render scaling, anti-aliasing, shadows and demanding cloud settings.
  • High CPU time: reduce AI traffic, object or terrain detail and other simulation-heavy settings. Lowering resolution will not fix a CPU bottleneck.
  • Repeated pauses: check RAM and VRAM pressure, background applications, storage activity and thermal throttling.
  • Wireless artefacts or latency: separate rendering performance from network and video-encoding performance by testing a supported wired connection where possible.

Does every VR flight simulator need SteamVR?

No. Some flight simulators can use a headset vendor’s OpenXR runtime directly and bypass SteamVR. Test the same runtime and launch method you plan to use: a SteamVR failure does not necessarily rule out direct OpenXR operation, while a SteamVR pass does not certify performance in an OpenXR simulator.
