Can I use an old joystick on a modern PC?

Yes. Many old joysticks still work with modern PC flight simulators. An older USB model that Windows recognises as a game controller usually needs only calibration and fresh control bindings. A game-port plug has 15 pins in two rows. Do not confuse it with the three-row 15-pin VGA connector once used for monitors. A passive cable that merely changes the plug shape will not convert a game-port joystick into USB; the adaptor needs electronics that present the controls to Windows as a USB game controller.

Some game-port devices use proprietary digital signalling rather than standard analogue axes. This is especially common among older force-feedback products, so a generic converter may support neither the controls nor the motors.

How do I test an old joystick in Windows?

Test the joystick in Windows before changing any flight simulator settings.

  1. Identify the exact model and connector. Check the label on the base rather than judging compatibility from the plug alone.
  2. Connect it directly to the PC. For the first test, avoid an unpowered hub and use a known working USB port.

  4. Test every control. Move the stick slowly through its full travel, operate the throttle and rudder twist if fitted, and press every button. Watch for axes that jump, remain off-centre or never reach full travel.
  5. Calibrate where available. Run the Windows calibration tool if the controller's properties provide it. Do not use a large dead zone to conceal severe electrical spikes; that makes precise flying difficult.
  6. Create bindings inside the simulator. Unknown controllers often receive no automatic profile. Assign pitch to the elevator axis and roll to the aileron axis rather than binding them to digital up, down, left and right commands. Why is my old joystick detected but not working properly?

Detection proves that Windows can see the device, but it does not guarantee clean axes, compatible drivers or correct simulator assignments.

  • No device appears: try another USB port and inspect Device Manager. If the joystick depends on an obsolete 32-bit or unsigned kernel driver, compatibility mode alone will not make that driver work on modern 64-bit Windows. We do not recommend weakening Windows security to force it to install.
  • Buttons work but axes do not: the game-port converter may not support that model or may be set to the wrong operating mode.
  • Axes jump or drift: recalibration and a small dead zone can handle minor wear. Persistent spikes usually indicate dirty or worn potentiometers, a damaged cable or failing electronics.
  • Windows works but the simulator does not: create a manual controller profile and check for duplicate assignments. Two devices commanding the same flight axis often cause twitching or controls that snap back.
  • Force feedback is missing: basic axes and buttons can work even when the old force-feedback driver or protocol does not. Treat force feedback as model-specific rather than assuming USB detection guarantees it.

Will an old joystick work in MSFS, X-Plane or FSX?

A joystick that exposes standard axes and buttons through Windows can usually be mapped in Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX, Prepar3D and many other PC simulators.

A blank preset in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or 2024 does not necessarily mean the controller is incompatible. It often means Microsoft has not supplied a ready-made profile for that device. Follow the manual controller-profile steps for MSFS 2020 and 2024, then add a modest dead zone or response curve only if the hardware needs it.

Should I buy an adaptor or replace the joystick?

An active adaptor makes sense when the old joystick is mechanically sound, has a control layout you value and is explicitly supported by the converter.

  • Keep and adapt it when all axes move cleanly, the buttons are sufficient and losing force feedback would not matter.
  • Replace it when the converter cannot handle its protocol, the controls spike badly, essential axes are missing or the total adaptor cost approaches that of a newer controller.
