The familiar game-port connector has 15 pins in two rows and is technically a DA-15 connector. Do not confuse it with the three-row 15-pin VGA monitor plug. A passive cable that only changes the plug shape cannot turn game-port signals into USB; the adaptor needs electronics that present the axes and buttons to Windows as a game controller.

Check the model number on the base before buying anything. Two joysticks with identical plugs may use different signalling, particularly among early digital and force-feedback designs. An adaptor described only as “game port to USB” is not enough unless its documentation explicitly supports the exact joystick or its protocol.

How do I test a USB joystick with joy.cpl?

Open joy.cpl and verify every axis and button before creating a flight-simulator profile.

  1. Identify the exact hardware. Record the model number, connector type and any required receiver or power unit. Never substitute a power supply merely because its plug fits.
  2. Inspect the joystick. Look for a damaged cable, bent pins, corrosion, a loose USB plug or excessive mechanical play around the centre.
  3. Connect it directly. Use a known-working USB port and avoid an unpowered hub during the first test. If it is a game-port stick, connect it through the active converter supported by that model.
  4. Open Game Controllers. Press the Windows key and R, type joy.cpl, then press Enter. The joystick or converter should appear in the controller list.
  5. Test every input. Open the device's properties, move the stick slowly through its full pitch and roll travel, operate the throttle and twist axis if fitted, move the hat switch and press every button. Watch for jumping values, an off-centre position or an axis that cannot reach its full range.
  6. Calibrate if the option exists. Follow the calibration prompts without forcing the stick beyond its normal stops. Some USB controllers calibrate internally and do not expose a Windows calibration button; that alone is not a fault.
  7. Create simulator bindings. Unsupported older devices often have no automatic preset. Bind pitch, roll, throttle and rudder to continuous axis commands rather than digital increase, decrease or directional commands.

A joystick can appear in Windows while still suffering from an incompatible converter, noisy sensors, missing assignments or conflicting controls.

If Windows reports clean movement but the simulator has no useful preset, follow our manual axis and button assignment guidance. Response curves can soften an over-sensitive stick, but they cannot repair electrical spikes or a broken axis.

Do old PC force-feedback drivers still work?

Old PC force-feedback drivers sometimes work, but there is no universal driver that restores force feedback to every legacy joystick.

Three separate parts must be compatible:

  • Windows must expose the device and its effects interface. Basic axes and buttons may use standard USB support even when the old force-feedback control panel no longer runs.
  • The connection must carry output commands. Generic game-port-to-USB converters normally translate input only, so they cannot send effects back to the motors.
  • The simulator must generate supported effects. Detection in joy.cpl does not prove that a particular simulator can produce force feedback through that device.

Compatibility mode can sometimes help an old configuration application, but it cannot turn a 32-bit kernel driver into a compatible 64-bit driver. We do not recommend disabling Windows security or installing an unknown driver package merely to recover force feedback. If the stick already works as a standard USB controller, keep using its axes and buttons unless the exact model has a compatible, trusted driver.

Do not confuse spring centring, motorised centring and simulator-driven aerodynamic effects. A stick can centre itself while providing no actual flight-force data, and another can lose its force feedback while retaining perfectly usable input controls.

Will an old flight joystick work in MSFS, X-Plane, FSX or FS2004?

If Windows exposes standard axes and buttons, most PC flight simulators can map them even when the joystick has no named preset.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 may show a blank profile for an unrecognised controller. That usually means the bindings must be created manually, not that the USB joystick is incompatible. FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane can also use many generic Windows game controllers, although button names and automatic assignments vary. Whichever simulator you use, assign the stick's fore-and-aft movement to the elevator axis and side-to-side movement to the aileron axis. Bind a twist grip or pedals to the rudder axis and a throttle lever to a throttle axis. If an axis moves backwards, invert it in the simulator rather than recalibrating the hardware in the wrong direction.

Should I buy a game-port adaptor or a new USB joystick for PC?

Buy an adaptor only when it explicitly supports the exact old joystick and the hardware still produces clean, stable inputs.

  • Keep and adapt the old joystick when it has little centre play, every axis moves smoothly, its buttons meet your needs and losing force feedback is acceptable.
  • Replace it when it needs an unavailable driver, uses an unsupported proprietary protocol, has severe drift, is missing its receiver or requires several uncertain adaptors.
  • Compare the total cost when a specialised converter is required. Rescuing a worn joystick makes little sense if the interface costs nearly as much as a dependable modern controller.

What makes a good replacement flight joystick for PC?

A suitable replacement should provide standard USB game-controller support and all the independent axes needed for the aircraft you fly.

  • Choose separate pitch and roll axes, plus either a twist-rudder axis or support for separate pedals.
  • Look for a usable throttle control, a hat switch for views and enough buttons for trim, brakes and frequently used cockpit commands.
  • Prioritise stable centring and low sensor noise over elaborate software that may eventually become unsupported.
  • Check the grip size, handedness and desk footprint rather than assuming every joystick will be comfortable in the same setup.
  • If force feedback is essential, confirm support for the exact joystick, Windows environment and simulator before paying extra for it.
