Where can I download New York scenery for FS2004?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Download New York scenery for FS2004, including regional mesh, Manhattan landmarks, KJFK airport scenery and a LaGuardia AFCAD update.

You can download free New York scenery add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9) from Fly Away Simulation. The most useful options cover regional terrain mesh, lower-Manhattan landmarks, Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia airport-layout data. Choose by area and scenery type rather than installing every package at once.

Which FS2004 New York scenery should I download?

Choose regional mesh for wider New York flying, landmark scenery for Manhattan sightseeing, a full airport package for KJFK, or an AFCAD file for more accurate LaGuardia operations.

DownloadWhat it changesBest choice for
Regional terrain mesh covering New York and New EnglandImproves terrain elevation across a broad area. It does not add buildings, aerial imagery or detailed airports.Cross-country, low-level and general-aviation flights around New York State and the northeastern United States.
Lower-Manhattan World Trade Center landmark packageAdds a detailed landmark enhancement around the World Trade Center site rather than replacing the whole city.VFR sightseeing and approaches that pass over central or lower Manhattan.
Dedicated Kennedy International airport enhancementReplaces or improves FS2004's representation of KJFK with airport-specific scenery.Airliner operations into Kennedy and pilots who want more than the default airport.
LaGuardia AFCAD2 airport-layout updateUpdates airport data such as runways, taxiways, parking positions and aircraft allocation.More credible KLGA ground operations and AI parking without expecting a full visual airport replacement.

Will a LaGuardia AFCAD add custom terminals?

No. An AFCAD file mainly changes the airport layout and the data used by your aircraft and AI traffic. It does not normally provide detailed terminal models, city buildings or terrain. Choose full airport scenery when visual detail matters; choose an AFCAD when layout and parking accuracy are the priority.

Can New York mesh, city and airport scenery be used together?

Usually, yes: regional mesh, a Manhattan landmark package, KJFK scenery and a LaGuardia AFCAD affect different scenery types or locations. Mesh changes terrain elevation, the city package adds local objects, and each airport package controls its own airfield.

Conflicts begin when two add-ons modify the same airport or include competing facility, flatten, exclude or landclass files. Use only one third-party AFCAD or airport layout for each ICAO code. For example, do not install two different KLGA AFCAD files together, and check whether a complete KJFK package already includes its own airport-layout file.

If one package must override another, place the more specific airport or city entry above the broad regional entry in the FS2004 Scenery Library. Keep each add-on in a separate folder so it can be disabled without disturbing the others.

How should I install the scenery without causing conflicts?

Install and test one package at a time so any duplicate airport, missing texture or loading problem can be traced to the add-on that caused it.

  1. Confirm FS2004 compatibility. The documentation should explicitly mention FS2004 or FS9. Scenery made for FSX or newer simulators is not a drop-in replacement.
  2. Extract the complete archive. Do not run scenery directly from a compressed file. Preserve the supplied folder structure and read any package-specific instructions.
  3. Select the correct scenery folder. For a conventional manual package, add the parent folder containing its Scenery and, where supplied, Texture subfolders to the FS2004 Scenery Library.
  4. Disable competing airport files. Back up and remove or deactivate older third-party files for the same airport before enabling a new KJFK or KLGA package.
  5. Load FS2004 and test locally. Let the simulator rebuild its scenery database, then start at the affected airport or fly directly over the covered area before adding another package.

Why does the New York scenery look unchanged?

If the scenery appears unchanged, FS2004 is usually reading the wrong folder, the library entry is inactive, or the expected effect does not match the add-on type.

  • Check that the new area is enabled in the Scenery Library.
  • Make sure the selected folder contains the package's Scenery subfolder; selecting an outer extraction folder may leave FS2004 unable to find its BGL files.
  • Raise Scenery complexity if landmark objects or airport buildings are missing.
  • Remember that terrain mesh changes elevation only. Around flatter parts of New York City, its effect may be subtler than it is over more varied regional terrain.
  • An AFCAD change is easiest to see in runway, taxiway, parking and AI behaviour. It will not transform the skyline or add detailed terminals.
  • If duplicate runways, overlapping buildings or misplaced parking appear, disable the older add-on for that airport and retest.
