Positioned on the rugged and picturesque west coast of New Zealand’s South Island, Greymouth Airport (NZGM) offers a modest yet functional facility for both general aviation and helicopter tours. Created by developer and designer, Nick Hobart, this freeware airfield enhancement upgrades runway paths, modifies fuel point placements, and refines windsock positioning for added realism in Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
Enhanced Airport Layout and Operational Refinements
The updated scenery focuses on blending into the unique geological setting around Greymouth, well-known for its proximity to the Grey River and dramatic coastline. These modifications include:
- Accurate taxiway alignments based on real-world references.
- Adjustments to parking spots for local aero club usage and helicopter operations.
- Precise fuel area relocation to match actual on-site fueling procedures.
- Resituated windsocks for faithful crosswind representation.
This approach ensures that sim pilots experience a dimension of authenticity when practicing takeoffs, approaches, or rotorcraft maneuvers in one of New Zealand’s most scenic regions.

Installation Procedure
For seamless integration into your existing sim framework, place the extracted files into your preferred Addon Scenery directory under the scenery subfolder. For instance:
- Example Directory
- C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery\scenery
By positioning them in this folder and ensuring the scenery library is properly activated, the enhancements will appear the next time you load your simulator. Note that the default simulator library does not originally include Greymouth Airport data. Consequently, this enhancement relies solely on default scenery objects to achieve its adjustments.
Important Notes
Though the airfield accommodates both private pilot activities and commercial rotorcraft operations, there are currently no scheduled airlines servicing NZGM. The scenery files are offered free of charge, but installation and usage are performed at the user’s discretion, without warranty. The design process employed the ADE 1.37 toolset to ensure accurate terrain and structure placement. When installing, it is advised to back up existing files and proceed carefully in case any conflicts arise.
