What are the best free aircraft for X-Plane 12?

Compare the best free aircraft for X-Plane 12, from Zibo's 737 to built-in GA and long-haul choices, with compatibility and install advice.
Adam McEnroe

The best free aircraft for X-Plane 12 are the Zibo 737-800X for realistic airline procedures, the included Cessna 172SP for training, Citation X for business-jet flying, Airbus A330-300 for long-haul operations, and PA-18 Super Cub for bush flying. A native X-Plane 12 freeware 737-800/BBJ2 is another strong downloadable choice.

Which free X-Plane 12 aircraft should I choose?

Choose an aircraft for the type of flying you intend to do, not simply for the longest feature list.

AircraftBest forWhy it stands outMain caveat
Zibo 737-800XDetailed airline operationsExtensive 737 systems, custom avionics and realistic cockpit proceduresInstallation and updates must use the X-Plane 12 package; it is more demanding than a default aircraft
Dedicated X-Plane 12 freeware 737-800/BBJ2 packageAirliner and business-jet flyingDetailed virtual cockpit, custom systems, autoflight and a BBJ2 configurationDownload the package specifically labelled for X-Plane 12
Default Cessna 172SPTraining, VFR and basic IFRPredictable handling, analogue and glass-cockpit options, and no installation workLess systems depth than a specialist paid training aircraft
Default Citation XBusiness jets and high-speed IFRA capable native X-Plane 12 jet with no third-party dependenciesIts speed makes descent and energy planning less forgiving
Default Airbus A330-300Airbus-style long-haul flyingThe most dependable no-cost widebody starting point because it ships with the simulatorDo not expect every system to match a high-end commercial add-on
Default PA-18 Super CubBush flying and tailwheel practiceGood visibility, low-speed performance and straightforward systemsCrosswinds and ground handling require proper tailwheel technique
Default F-14 TomcatMilitary and carrier operationsFast, distinctive and considerably more involved than a basic fighterCarrier approaches and aircraft management have a steep learning curve

For a freeware 737, choose the Zibo 737-800X when procedural and systems depth is the priority. Choose the alternative 737-800/BBJ2 when its model, cockpit implementation or business-jet configuration better suits your flying. Install them in separate folders; never merge two unrelated 737 packages.

Are the included X-Plane 12 aircraft really free?

The default fleet is bundled rather than downloadable freeware, but it costs nothing beyond X-Plane 12 and contains some of the simulator's most dependable aircraft.

These models are built for X-Plane 12's lighting, weather and flight-model behaviour, so simulator updates are less likely to break them. A mistake we see constantly is replacing the default fleet immediately with an older X-Plane 11 download, then mistaking compatibility faults for simulator bugs.

Start with the Cessna 172SP if you are learning controls, navigation or landings. Move to the Citation X or A330 once you can manage an IFR route, descent planning and autopilot modes without fighting the aeroplane.

How can I tell whether freeware really supports X-Plane 12?

A suitable download should explicitly identify an X-Plane 12 version; appearing in the aircraft-selection screen does not prove full compatibility.

  • Look for a dedicated X-Plane 12 build. Do not assume an aircraft is compatible merely because its page mentions X-Plane generally.
  • Treat X-Plane 11 packages cautiously. They may load but still have transparent windscreens, incorrect lighting, missing sounds, dead avionics or flight-model problems.
  • Check custom-plugin compatibility. An aircraft can display correctly while its flight-management system or engine logic fails because an included plugin does not support your operating system or processor.
  • Check required dependencies. Some conversions depend on a default aircraft or another component and will not work as an independent installation.
  • Keep each aircraft separate. Merging updates, liveries and plugins from different releases is a common cause of unexplained faults.

Our X-Plane freeware aircraft and add-on library covers airliners, military aircraft, helicopters and historic types. For easier aircraft that suit training and touring, narrow the search to the light general aviation download collection, then confirm that the chosen file supports X-Plane 12.

Why does a free aircraft not appear or work?

Most missing or broken freeware aircraft are caused by an incorrectly nested folder, the wrong simulator version or stale files left behind during an update.

  1. Extract the archive fully. The usable aircraft folder should contain at least one .acf file. If that folder is buried inside another identically named folder, X-Plane may not find it.
  2. Use the correct location. Place the complete aircraft folder under X-Plane 12's Aircraft directory, preferably in your own subfolder rather than modifying the simulator's default aircraft.
  3. Remove obsolete releases. When replacing an aircraft, delete or move the old version unless its documentation specifically instructs you to merge an update.
  4. Check Log.txt. After a failed load, this file can identify missing plugins, unreadable files and aircraft-version errors.
  5. Test without unrelated plugins. If the aircraft loads in a clean setup, restore global plugins one at a time to find the conflict.

Our step-by-step X-Plane 12 aircraft installation instructions cover the folder structure and the checks to make when an aircraft does not appear. Do not overwrite a default Laminar aircraft unless the add-on explicitly says it is a modification of that model.

What should I fly first?

The most useful progression is a stable default trainer, then a faster included aircraft, followed by one complex freeware add-on.

  1. Learn the simulator in the Cessna 172SP. Set up controls, practise circuits and understand navigation without troubleshooting third-party systems.
  2. Try the Citation X or A330. This introduces faster planning, autopilot mode management and more involved cockpit procedures.
  3. Install one freeware aircraft. The Zibo 737-800X is the stronger choice for systems-heavy airline flying; the dedicated 737-800/BBJ2 is useful when you want a different 737 implementation or executive configuration.

This order makes faults easier to diagnose. If the default aircraft works but the download does not, the problem is likely to be the package, installation or one of its plugins rather than X-Plane 12 itself.
