How do you enable the Steam Overlay and use Shift+Tab?

To enable the Steam Overlay for a PC game or simulator, open Steam, select Settings, choose In Game, and turn on Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. Launch the title through Steam, then press Shift+Tab, the default keyboard shortcut. Change it from the same settings page if needed.

How do you enable the Steam Overlay?

Enable it globally in Steam and make sure it has not been disabled for the individual game.

1. Open Steam settings: In the desktop Steam client, open Settings and select In Game.
2. Turn on the global overlay: Enable Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
3. Check the game setting: Open Library, right-click the game, select Properties, and look under General. Its Steam Overlay option must also be enabled.
4. Launch through Steam: Start the game with its Steam Library Play button rather than opening the executable directly.
5. Open the overlay: Once the game is running, press Shift+Tab. Press the same shortcut again to close it.

The global and per-game controls are separate. A mistake we see regularly is enabling the main Steam setting while leaving the individual game's option switched off.

What is the Steam Overlay keyboard shortcut?

The default Steam Overlay keyboard shortcut is Shift+Tab.

To change it, return to Steam > Settings > In Game, select the overlay shortcut field and press the new key combination. Choose a combination that is not already assigned to a simulator, aircraft add-on, controller utility or recording application.

Steam intercepts the shortcut before the game can use it. In a flight simulator, pause or stabilise the aircraft before opening the overlay, because simulator controls may stop responding while the overlay has keyboard and mouse focus.

What can you do with the Steam Overlay?

The Steam Overlay provides Steam tools without making you leave the running game completely.

• Open the friends list, chat and game invitations.
• View game information and available community features.
• Use overlay panels such as the web browser or notes where supported by the Steam client.
• Capture Steam screenshots with the configured screenshot key, which is F12 by default.
• Review screenshots and other game-specific Steam content.

Why is the Steam Overlay not working?

If Shift+Tab does nothing, the usual causes are a disabled per-game setting, launching outside Steam, a shortcut conflict or another program interfering with the graphics hook.

1. Recheck both switches: Confirm that the overlay is enabled under Steam's In Game settings and the game's Properties.
2. Restart the game: Overlay changes may not affect a title that is already running. Close the game fully and launch it again through Steam.
3. Restart Steam: Exit the client completely rather than merely closing its window, then reopen it and test again.
4. Change the shortcut: Assign a different key combination temporarily. This identifies conflicts with simulator commands, accessibility tools and keyboard utilities.
5. Match privilege levels: On Windows, the overlay may fail when the game runs as administrator but Steam does not. Remove unnecessary administrator settings from the game, or ensure both processes use the same privilege level.

Some anti-cheat systems, older rendering modes and external launchers can prevent Steam from attaching the overlay. If the overlay works in other games but not one particular title, that points to game-specific compatibility rather than a broken Steam installation.

Can you use the Steam Overlay with non-Steam games?

The overlay can work with a non-Steam game after it has been added to the Steam Library, but compatibility is not guaranteed.

Use Steam's Add a Non-Steam Game option, create the Library shortcut and always launch the program through that shortcut. If an external launcher starts a separate game process and then closes, Steam may attach the overlay to the launcher rather than the game itself.

Does the Steam Overlay affect performance?

The Steam Overlay can affect performance, although a large frame-rate loss usually indicates an open resource-heavy panel, several overlays running together or a compatibility problem.

Close browser and chat panels when they are not needed, then compare the same aircraft, airport and view with the overlay enabled and disabled. Testing a repeatable scene matters in flight simulators because weather, scenery loading and traffic can otherwise disguise the result.
