Fix FSX randomly minimising to the desktop by tracing focus-stealing apps, overlays, key conflicts, add-ons and full-screen settings in the right order.
FSX usually minimises to the desktop because another program, notification, overlay or key command steals focus from its full-screen display. Switch to windowed mode as a quick test, then disable background overlays and alerts, check Alt/Windows-key inputs, and isolate add-ons. If FSX closes completely, treat it as a crash instead.
Is FSX minimising or actually crashing?
A minimisation where FSX remains running is normally a loss of focus, not a simulator failure. Check the taskbar or Task Manager before changing anything.

Full-screen FSX reacts visibly when another application takes control of the desktop. Ordinary notification banners do not always cause this, but updater dialogues, sign-in prompts, overlays and utilities opening their own windows can. If it happens at a regular interval, suspect a scheduled updater, synchronisation utility or controller service.
How do I stop FSX minimising at random?
The quickest route to the cause is to test full-screen focus first, then remove possible triggers one group at a time.
- Test windowed mode. Press
Alt+Enterbefore starting the flight. If the problem stops, focus loss is confirmed; keep FSX maximised in a window or continue isolating the program responsible. Clicking a browser, moving map or other program on a second screen normally removes focus from full-screen FSX. Windowed mode is the practical choice when those programs must remain interactive during the flight.
- Disable overlays and pop-ups temporarily. Test without the Steam Overlay in FSX: Steam Edition, Xbox Game Bar, graphics-card recording overlays, chat overlays, hardware monitoring displays and controller-profile notifications. Do not disable security protection; use its quiet or gaming notification option instead, where available.
- Check keyboard and controller inputs. A sticking Windows or Alt key, an accidental
Alt+Tab, or controller software sending a desktop shortcut can produce the same symptom. Disconnect non-essential controllers and close their profiling software for one test flight. - Run a clean background-app test. Close non-essential tray applications, restart Windows and test FSX before opening anything else. If it remains stable, restore programs in small groups until the minimisation returns. Avoid disabling unknown Windows services at random.
- Isolate FSX add-ons and external utilities. Load a default aircraft at a stock airport without external weather, tracking, ATC or panel programs. If the problem began after an installation, remove that package from the test and check its FSX: Steam Edition compatibility, particularly on computers where boxed FSX and Steam Edition have both been installed.
- Test Windows full-screen handling. Open the properties for
fsx.exeand, where offered, test the option to disable full-screen optimisations. Change only that setting, then retest. Old Windows compatibility modes and administrator rights are not general cures for focus stealing; mismatched administrator privileges can also stop external utilities communicating correctly with FSX.
A mistake we see constantly is changing compatibility mode, administrator rights, graphics options and the configuration file together. That may hide the trigger without identifying it, making the problem difficult to diagnose when it returns.
Should I reset the FSX configuration file?
Reset fsx.cfg only after windowed mode and background-app tests fail. A damaged full-screen or display setting can contribute, but the configuration file cannot stop another application from opening a focus-stealing window.
- Close FSX completely.
- Open
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX. Steam Edition may use this same folder; a side-by-side boxed and Steam installation can instead have anFSX-SEfolder. - Rename
fsx.cfgtofsx.cfg.old. - Start FSX and let it create a fresh configuration, then test before restoring custom settings.
Keep the old file as a backup. Do not immediately copy the entire old configuration back, because that also restores any faulty display entry you were trying to eliminate.
What if FSX closes or returns to a black screen?
If fsx.exe disappears, the simulator has crashed rather than minimised. Use our FSX crash diagnostic sequence to check configuration files, gauges, scenery, add-ons and system-resource failures.
If FSX stays open but restores without a usable picture, follow the FSX black-screen recovery steps. That symptom points towards the display mode, graphics driver or rendering configuration rather than a background application merely taking focus.
