How do I fix FSX randomly minimising to the desktop?

FSX and FSX: Steam Edition usually minimise because another app, overlay, dialogue or key command steals focus from the simulator’s full-screen window. Press Alt+Enter and test in windowed mode; then disable overlays and pop-ups, check keyboard or controller inputs, and isolate background utilities. If fsx.exe closes, diagnose a crash instead.

Is FSX minimising or actually crashing?

If fsx.exe remains running and your flight restores intact, FSX has lost focus rather than crashed. Check the taskbar or Task Manager before changing settings.

A notification banner alone does not always take focus. Updater dialogues, sign-in requests, licence prompts, controller utilities and applications opening a new window are more likely culprits.

How do I stop FSX randomly minimising?

Test FSX in windowed mode first, then remove possible focus-stealing programs one group at a time.

1. Switch to windowed mode. Press Alt+Enter before starting the flight and leave FSX running long enough for the fault to recur. If FSX stays visible but stops accepting controls until you click it, another application is still taking focus. If the problem disappears completely, full-screen handling is involved; follow our full-screen troubleshooting steps for Windows 10 and 11.
2. Watch what appears when FSX minimises. Note the time and use Alt+Tab to look for a dialogue or newly opened window. A repeatable interval often identifies an updater, synchronisation program, hardware utility or external FSX tool running a scheduled check.
3. Temporarily disable overlays. Test without the Steam Overlay in FSX: Steam Edition, Xbox Game Bar, graphics-card recording overlays, chat overlays, frame-rate displays and hardware-monitoring overlays. Disable one group at a time so you can identify the cause. Keep security protection enabled; use its quiet notification setting rather than turning it off.
4. Account for additional monitors. Clicking a browser, moving map, flight planner or any other program on a second screen normally removes focus from full-screen FSX. Use a maximised window when you need to interact with other displays during the flight.
5. Check the keyboard and controllers. A sticking Alt or Windows key, an accidental Alt+Tab, or controller-profile software sending a desktop shortcut can minimise FSX. Disconnect non-essential controllers and close macro or profiling utilities for one test flight.
6. Run a clean background-app test. Restart Windows, close non-essential tray applications and launch FSX before opening browsers, messaging tools or monitoring software. If FSX remains stable, restore those programs in small groups. Do not disable unknown Windows services at random.
7. Remove external FSX tools from the test. Load a default aircraft at a stock airport without external weather, ATC, camera, tracking or hardware-control programs. These tools can open connection errors or other prompts over FSX. If a hidden prompt also leaves the simulator unresponsive, use our process for diagnosing a frozen or unresponsive FSX menu.
8. Test Windows full-screen optimisations. Open the properties for fsx.exe, select the Compatibility tab and, where the option is available, test Disable fullscreen optimisations. Change only that setting before retesting. Old Windows compatibility modes and permanent administrator rights are not general fixes for lost focus; mismatched administrator privileges can also prevent external utilities from communicating with FSX.

A mistake we see constantly is changing compatibility mode, graphics options, administrator rights and fsx.cfg together. That may hide the trigger without showing which change fixed it, leaving the same problem difficult to diagnose when it returns.

Why does FSX minimise at the same interval?

A repeatable interval usually means a background program or external add-on is performing a scheduled refresh. Weather engines, tracking clients, cloud synchronisation tools, update checkers and controller services may display an error or status window when they refresh.

Record the interval, then test without one suspected utility for longer than that period. If FSX minimises after an add-on loses its connection, repair that program’s configuration rather than changing FSX display settings.

Should I run FSX in windowed or full-screen mode?

Use a maximised window when you regularly interact with other applications or monitors; retain full-screen mode only when it remains stable and you do not need to leave the simulator window.

• Choose windowed mode for multi-monitor flight planning, moving maps, streaming controls and frequent task switching. Losing keyboard focus may still occur, but FSX should not vanish from view.
• Choose full-screen mode if it performs correctly after the offending overlay or background program has been removed. Full-screen itself is not faulty merely because another application once stole focus.

Should I reset the FSX configuration file?

Reset fsx.cfg only after windowed-mode and background-app tests fail. A damaged display entry can affect full-screen recovery, but the configuration file cannot prevent another program from opening a focus-stealing window.

1. Close FSX completely. Confirm that fsx.exe is no longer present in Task Manager.
2. Open the active configuration folder. Boxed FSX normally uses %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX. Depending on installation history, FSX: Steam Edition may use that folder or %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX-SE. If both exist, the active fsx.cfg is normally the one whose modified time changes after FSX exits.
3. Rename the file. Change fsx.cfg to fsx.cfg.old rather than deleting it.
4. Generate a clean file. Start FSX, let it detect the graphics hardware, then test a default flight before restoring custom settings.

Keep the old file as a backup, but do not copy all of its contents straight back. Doing so also restores the display entry or other setting the reset was intended to remove.

What if FSX will not restore or has closed completely?

If FSX is still running but restores to a black screen, treat it as a display-mode failure rather than ordinary minimisation. Test Alt+Enter, disconnect unnecessary displays and work through our display-mode and black-screen checks for resolution, driver and multi-monitor problems.

If fsx.exe has disappeared, the simulator has crashed. Look for the exact Windows or FSX error before applying focus fixes; if it reports an available-memory problem, follow the FSX out-of-memory diagnosis and fixes instead.
