Why is the MSFS 2024 initial download so small? See what streams from the cloud, what stays on disk, and why the installation grows later.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024's initial download is small because it installs mainly the simulator core, then streams much of the world, airports and aircraft content from Microsoft's cloud as needed. It is not the full content library: flying, caching, updates and add-ons can still consume substantial bandwidth and local storage.
Why does MSFS 2024 stream so much content?
The small footprint is a deliberate result of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024's cloud-based content system. Instead of permanently installing every eligible aircraft, airport and world asset, the simulator retrieves many of them when a flight needs them.
| Content | How it is normally handled |
|---|---|
| Simulator core | Installed locally, including the executable, interface and essential packages |
| Terrain and world imagery | Mainly streamed for the area around the flight |
| Photogrammetry | Streamed when enabled and available |
| Official aircraft and airports | May be streamed, with supported content available for local download in updated builds |
| Caches and add-ons | Stored locally and counted against available disk space |
This means owning a larger edition does not mean every included asset has already been copied to the drive. The entitlement gives the simulator access to that content through its library and streaming system.
Is the small store download the whole installation?
No: on some platforms, the first store download is a bootstrap or core package rather than everything MSFS 2024 will ever use. The simulator may then check for mandatory files and updates when it first starts.
Download size and installed size are not identical, either. Compressed files expand during installation, while platform storage reports may handle reserved space, caches and optional packages separately. There is therefore no single small number that accurately represents the simulator's eventual disk use across every platform and edition.
A mistake we see constantly is assuming the installation has failed simply because it is much smaller than Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. In MSFS 2024, that difference is expected. Let the platform finish its installation, start the simulator online and accept any mandatory update before judging whether files are missing.
What makes the MSFS 2024 installation grow later?
Updates, caches, downloaded official content and add-ons can make the installation considerably larger after the initial download.
- Core updates: New simulator files may replace or add to the original installation.
- Rolling cache: Recently streamed world data can be retained on the drive. Our guide to configuring the rolling cache explains when it saves bandwidth and when it merely consumes space.
- Locally downloaded content: Keeping selected aircraft, airports or other supported packages on the drive trades disk space for less repeated streaming.
- Add-ons: Community packages and other installed extras remain local and can eventually outweigh the core simulator.
- Installation headroom: Updates may temporarily need extra working space while files are downloaded, unpacked and replaced.
For practical drive planning, use our breakdown of MSFS storage requirements rather than treating the storefront download figure as the final requirement.
Can MSFS 2024 content be downloaded instead of streamed?
Yes, updated versions of MSFS 2024 provide local-download controls for supported official content, including selected default aircraft and airports. Microsoft expanded these controls after launch; our report on the Sim Update 3 local-content changes gives the background.
- Keep content streamed when drive space is limited and the internet connection is fast, stable and uncapped.
- Download selected content when it is used frequently, the connection is unreliable or repeated streaming would waste a limited data allowance.
The available categories and labels can vary by simulator build and platform. Downloading aircraft or airport packages also does not create a complete offline copy of the planet; high-detail world scenery remains heavily dependent on cloud delivery.
Does the small download mean MSFS 2024 works offline?
The full MSFS 2024 experience requires an internet connection, despite the small local core being installed. Streamed scenery, photogrammetry and online services can be unavailable or reduced offline, while aircraft or airports that were never stored locally may not be ready for use.
Cached and downloaded assets can reduce that dependence, but they do not replace every online service. Our explanation of MSFS 2024's connection and offline requirements covers the platform and feature caveats.
If the simulator reaches the main menu and can load a flight, a small initial installation is normally working as designed. Repeated mandatory-download prompts, failure to reach the menu or the same update restarting every launch point to an installation or account problem rather than normal cloud streaming.
