How does MSFS 2024 physics compare with MSFS 2020?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 develops the distributed aerodynamic and environmental modelling used by MSFS 2020 rather than replacing it with a wholly unrelated flight model. The main gains are finer local airflow behaviour, revised ground interaction and broader physics systems available to aircraft developers.

Neither version turns every aircraft into an engineering-grade computational fluid dynamics simulation. Both combine simulator calculations with aircraft configuration, aerodynamic coefficients and, in some add-ons, custom systems or external flight models. Do MSFS 2020 aircraft automatically gain better physics in MSFS 2024?

No. A compatible MSFS 2020 aircraft may encounter MSFS 2024's revised atmosphere and ground environment, but it can retain its original geometry, coefficients, contact points, engine data and custom code.

To exploit native 2024 features fully, the developer generally needs to review and retune the package. Compatibility therefore does not mean that an imported aircraft has become a native MSFS 2024 aircraft. In some cases, new ground friction or contact behaviour merely exposes inaccurate wheel positions, suspension values or steering logic that was less obvious in MSFS 2020.

Why can the same aircraft feel worse in MSFS 2024?

A changed feel does not by itself prove that the underlying physics are worse. The most common causes are mismatched settings, an incomplete aircraft conversion or controller inputs that are no longer equivalent.

  • Duplicate control bindings: two devices commanding the same axis can cause oscillation, weak centring or unexpected control movement.
  • Different sensitivity curves: copying a numerical curve between versions does not guarantee identical response if the hardware profile or aircraft control logic differs.
  • Assistance settings: auto-rudder, assisted take-off, assisted landing and other aids can override or soften the behaviour being compared.
  • Weight and centre of gravity: fuel, payload and loading position materially change rotation, trim, stall speed and stability.
  • Weather variation: gusts, turbulence, density altitude and runway condition can overwhelm relatively small flight-model differences.
  • Legacy contact points: incorrect wheel geometry may cause bouncing, excessive drag, poor steering or sudden runway veering under the revised ground model.
  • Uneven frame delivery: low or inconsistent performance makes precise control harder and can be mistaken for unstable physics.

How can you compare MSFS 2024 and 2020 physics fairly?

A useful comparison separates platform changes from aircraft quality. Testing only one imported add-on measures its compatibility, while comparing unrelated default aircraft mostly measures different developer tuning.

  1. Run two types of test: use the same compatible aircraft in both simulators to isolate platform differences, then compare strong native aircraft to judge each simulator's potential.
  2. Match the configuration: use identical fuel, payload, centre of gravity, flap position and engine settings.
  3. Standardise the environment: select the same airport, runway, wind, temperature, pressure and turbulence conditions.
  4. Remove interference: disable piloting assists, check for duplicate bindings and match control curves and dead zones as closely as possible.
  5. Test specific behaviours: compare trim stability, power-off stalls, slips, crosswind taxiing, braking, rotation and landing rollout rather than relying on a general impression.
  6. Record indications: compare airspeed, angle of attack where displayed, power, vertical speed and control position. Cockpit vibration or camera movement alone is not evidence of different aerodynamics.

Which version should you choose for the best flight physics?

Choose MSFS 2024 for the higher physics ceiling, particularly if you fly native 2024 aircraft, helicopters, bush operations or missions involving detailed ground and payload interaction. Its ground handling and broader environmental systems are the stronger foundation.

Choose MSFS 2020 when a favourite mature aircraft has excellent tuning there but lacks a proper 2024 update. A polished aircraft implementation is usually more valuable than moving to a newer engine with an unrefined port.
