How do I adjust rudder sensitivity for PMDG aircraft?

PMDG aircraft do not normally have a dedicated rudder-sensitivity control. Adjust the rudder axis curve in the host simulator—usually MSFS, Prepar3D or FSX—then retain full axis travel, add only enough dead zone to stop jitter, and configure nosewheel steering separately if twitchy taxiing is the real problem.

Where is the PMDG rudder sensitivity setting?

The response curve is normally set in the simulator or controller profile, not inside the PMDG aircraft. PMDG configuration menus may offer options for assigning or linking nosewheel steering, but these are not replacements for calibrating the rudder axis.

In MSFS, select the controller carrying the rudder assignment and open its sensitivity controls. Prepar3D and FSX use older sensitivity and null-zone controls, so moving their sensitivity slider left is not necessarily equivalent to applying a gentle centre curve in MSFS.

How should I set up the rudder axis?

Start with one clean analogue rudder binding and a linear, full-range axis, then soften only the response around the centre.

  1. Identify the actual problem. Test the rudder in flight as well as during taxi. If it behaves normally in the air but steering is violent on the ground, configure nosewheel steering rather than weakening the rudder axis.
  2. Calibrate the hardware. Confirm that the pedals or twist grip move smoothly from stop to stop and return consistently to centre.   3. Remove duplicate assignments. Bind only one controller to the analogue rudder axis. Remove unwanted rudder bindings from a joystick twist grip, gamepad or second profile, and do not bind the same device to both the rudder axis and digital Rudder Left/Rudder Right commands.
  4. Soften the centre gradually. Apply a modest, symmetrical curve so small pedal movements produce smaller initial inputs. Make one change at a time; there is no correct percentage for every set of pedals.
  5. Use the smallest effective dead zone. A dead zone should stop centre jitter, not conceal a poor calibration. An excessive value creates a lifeless centre followed by an abrupt rudder response.
  6. Preserve the endpoints. Check the simulator's input indicator and ensure full pedal travel still reaches full commanded rudder. Avoid reducing extremity or maximum range merely to make the centre less sensitive.

Do not edit PMDG aircraft or flight-model files to solve a controller response problem. Such changes can affect handling beyond the rudder axis and may be overwritten by an aircraft update.

Why is a PMDG aircraft too sensitive only while taxiing?

Twitchy ground handling usually points to nosewheel steering rather than excessive aerodynamic rudder authority. PMDG airliners may distinguish between the rudder pedals and the steering tiller, depending on the aircraft, simulator and product version.

A separate tiller or nosewheel-steering axis is the best choice when the product supports it. Pedal steering then provides limited directional correction while the tiller supplies the larger steering angles needed at gates and tight taxiway turns. If no tiller is available, use the PMDG option that links rudder input to nosewheel steering where the particular aircraft provides one.

Why do sensitivity changes sometimes have no effect?

Sensitivity changes have no effect when the wrong controller profile is active, another device is also commanding the rudder, or the input is digital rather than an analogue axis. Assistance features such as automatic rudder can also compete with the pilot's command.

  • Confirm that the PMDG aircraft is using the controller profile you edited.
  • Search every connected device for rudder and steering assignments.
  • Disable automatic rudder or similar piloting assistance while testing.
  • Avoid applying one response curve in controller software and another in the simulator unless that double curve is intentional.
  • Check that toe-brake axes have not accidentally been assigned as rudder input.

If the axis is missing, intermittent or stuck rather than merely sensitive, work through the checks for binding conflicts, calibration faults and unresponsive rudder pedals before changing PMDG settings. Once the input is clean, save a dedicated controller profile where the simulator permits it and test both low-speed taxiing and full rudder travel before flight.
