Middleware can calculate forces from airspeed, trim, control position and other simulator data even when the simulator does not generate DirectInput effects itself. This is not automatic compatibility: the middleware must support both the simulator and the particular joystick.

Will an old force-feedback joystick work on Windows 11?

An old USB force-feedback joystick may work on Windows 11, but axis recognition and motorised effects are separate tests.

Open the Windows Set up USB game controllers panel and confirm that pitch, roll, buttons and the twist axis are detected. If the stick appears there but provides no forces in the simulator, the problem is usually simulator support, an inactive force-feedback option or missing middleware—not calibration.

Legacy devices that require discontinued proprietary drivers are less dependable than models which use standard USB input. Gameport-to-USB adapters commonly preserve basic axes and buttons but not the original force-feedback protocol. Avoid unverified driver packages intended for much older Windows releases.

PC compatibility also says nothing about consoles. A desktop force-feedback joystick should not be expected to work with Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5 unless that exact peripheral is supported by the console and simulator.

How do I configure a force-feedback joystick?

A clean setup uses one source for force effects and one binding for each flight-control axis.

  1. Verify the hardware in Windows. Check axis movement, buttons and any force test supplied by the trusted device driver or control software.
  2. Remove duplicate bindings. Assign pitch and roll to the force-feedback stick once, then clear accidental assignments from throttles, pedals and virtual controllers.
  3. Select one force source. Use either the simulator's native force feedback or compatible middleware. Running two systems at once can create excessive centring, oscillation or conflicting trim positions.
  4. Configure trim behaviour. In a properly modelled conventional aircraft, trimming should move the stick's neutral point rather than merely adding visual elevator trim while the motor keeps pulling towards the centre.
  5. Begin with conservative force levels. Increase overall gain, damping and individual effects gradually. Maximum gain often clips subtle forces and can cause the stick to hunt around its centre.

Why does the joystick work but have no force feedback?

If the axes and buttons work but the motors do not, the joystick is being recognised as an input device without receiving force commands.

  • Constant spring force only: the controller's driver is applying a fixed centring spring; the simulator is not producing dynamic feedback.
  • No resistance at all: force feedback may be disabled, the middleware may not be connected, or the selected aircraft may not be supported.
  • Forces pull in the wrong direction: use the simulator or device software's force-axis swap or reversal control. Do not reverse the aircraft's pitch or roll input merely to correct motor direction.
  • Violent shaking or oscillation: reduce gain and damping effects, check for duplicated force sources and inspect the controller for mechanical play.
  • Trim feels incorrect: check the aircraft-specific force-feedback or trim mode. Helicopters and aircraft with unusual control systems may require different behaviour from a conventional aeroplane.

Do not judge support solely by runway vibration, gun recoil or stall shaking. The more useful test is whether control loading changes sensibly with speed and whether trimming changes the commanded neutral position. Hydraulically powered aircraft may also transmit much less natural aerodynamic force to the pilot than an unassisted light aircraft.

Is a force-feedback joystick the right choice?

Choose force feedback when your preferred simulator and aircraft support meaningful trim and control loading; choose a spring-centred joystick when broad compatibility and simple setup matter more.
