This distinctive FS2004 add-on showcases a cargo-configured MD-11 in Evergreen International Airlines markings. Developed as freeware by the renowned iFDG group, it incorporates numerous advanced animations, reflective textures, and intricate lighting options that closely replicate the real wide-body trijet. All credit goes to the creators: Model and FDE by Albaro Villegas, master textures by Ben Jones, testing by the MD-11 Beta Team, livery work by Ben Jones, plus documentation from Albaro Villegas and Basten Heidema.
Robust Freighter Design and Special Features
This virtual aircraft is based on the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, originally produced in Long Beach, California, until 2001. It includes animated control surfaces (such as flaps, spoilers, and flaperons [control surfaces acting both as flaps and ailerons]) along with detailed wingviews that accentuate its wide-span layout. The package offers a complete lighting array, from navigational beacons to landing floodlights.
Engine options on the real MD-11 spanned General Electric’s CF6-80C2 and Pratt & Whitney’s PW4460 or PW4462, each recognized for efficiency in its thrust class. In this add-on, iFDG’s flight model captures the essential performance characteristics, matching climb rates, thrust settings, and range expectations for a heavy freighter.
Cargo Heritage of Evergreen International Airlines
Evergreen International Airlines, long recognized for its worldwide cargo operations, used a fleet that included wide-cabin freighters such as the MD-11. The airline’s paint scheme, reflected here, emphasizes its legacy of high-volume freight hauling and global reach. On the real flight deck, a dual digital autopilot system, wind-shear alert, and computerized system controllers reduce pilot workload. This simulation honors all those details through carefully tuned avionics and cockpit readouts tailored for two-person crews.
The genuine MD-11’s fuselage measures approximately 200 feet 10 inches (61.2 m) in length, making it longer than its predecessor, the DC-10. Operators benefited from various configurations—full freighter, convertible, or combi—while the extended-range version added an auxiliary fuel tank, extending reach to about 8,225 statute miles (13,230 km). In the model, reflective surface mapping and precise proportions mirror these real-world dimensions.
With up to 410 possible seats in a high-density setup, the MD-11 also devoted substantial below-deck space to pallets and containers when configured for cargo. In the simulation, you can observe the redesigned wing trailing edges and distinctive tail cone shaping that helped reduce drag and conserve fuel on the actual airframe.
Installation and Recommended Use
To install, simply extract the included folder into your preferred Flight Simulator 2004 “aircraft” directory. Then, move the files found within the “effects” folder into your main Flight Simulator “EFFECTS” directory. The interactive effects can be triggered with the I key, adding additional realism.
Once installed, enjoy operating the tri-engine layout, which offers enhanced stability and unique handling characteristics. Practice with different cargo loads to feel how weight distribution and aerodynamics impact approach and climb profiles.
This freeware add-on by iFDG merges carefully crafted details with the storied background of the MD-11, offering a faithful recreation of Evergreen’s freighter operations. It honors the look and performance of the real-world platform without compromising control accuracy, making it an excellent option for enthusiasts eager to replicate big-cargo missions in FS2004.
