Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 do not officially support Linux, and VR is not a dependable Proton or Wine use case. The flat-screen Steam editions may run through compatibility layers, but headset detection and OpenXR often fail. For reliable MSFS VR, install and run the simulator on Windows.
The verdict is the same for both releases. Neither has a native Linux executable or a supported route from the simulator's Windows OpenXR calls to a Linux VR runtime.
Why can flat-screen MSFS work on Linux but VR cannot?
Flat-screen mode needs Proton to translate the simulator's Windows graphics and system calls, while VR adds several more components that must all communicate correctly. These include the Windows OpenXR loader, the Linux headset driver, the Linux VR runtime, motion tracking and the compositor that presents separate frames to each eye.
A standard Proton installation does not guarantee that this entire chain will work. The simulator may run normally on a monitor yet report no headset, open a black VR view or crash when VR mode is activated.
The Steam edition is the only practical Linux candidate because Steam can launch it through Proton. Microsoft Store and Xbox app installations depend on Windows services that ordinary Wine and Proton setups do not reproduce reliably. Only a Windows installation provides the supported Microsoft Flight Simulator VR environment.

Can Proton or Wine make MSFS VR work?
An advanced user may get parts of the VR chain working, but there is no universal Proton recipe we can recommend for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or 2024. Success depends on the headset, Linux runtime, graphics driver, Proton build and the bridge used to pass Windows OpenXR calls to Linux.
If you want to experiment, isolate each layer rather than changing everything at once:
- Test the headset on Linux first. Confirm that tracking and stereoscopic output work in a native Linux VR application. MSFS cannot repair a broken headset runtime.
- Run MSFS in flat-screen mode. Complete the Microsoft account sign-in and content installation before introducing VR.
- Configure the OpenXR bridge. Simply making a Linux runtime active does not necessarily expose it to a Windows application running under Proton. The required bridge and procedure depend on the Linux VR stack.
- Test headset detection before tuning graphics. If MSFS cannot see the headset, render scaling, resolution and quality settings are irrelevant.
- Expect updates to cause regressions. MSFS, Proton, graphics drivers and Linux VR components update independently, so a previously working combination can stop working.
Common symptoms point to different layers. No headset detected usually means the Windows OpenXR call is not reaching the Linux runtime. A black headset image or compositor crash suggests a graphics-sharing or runtime compatibility failure. Login or installation errors occurring before VR starts belong to the Proton prefix or web-authentication layer and should be solved in flat-screen mode first.
Does the VR headset change the answer?
A headset with functioning Linux drivers improves the odds, but it does not make MSFS VR officially supported. Some headsets rely on vendor desktop software that is unavailable on Linux, while community drivers may support tracking without reproducing every feature expected by the Windows OpenXR stack.
An OpenXR-compatible label alone is not enough. It must refer to a working Linux runtime, and Proton still needs a way to connect the simulator's Windows OpenXR loader to that runtime.
What is the reliable way to play MSFS in VR?
Dual-booting into Windows is the dependable solution for both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024. It gives the simulator direct access to the supported headset software, graphics driver and OpenXR runtime without a Linux compatibility layer between them.

A Windows virtual machine with GPU and USB passthrough is theoretically possible, but VR compositor timing, headset access and graphics passthrough make it considerably harder than dual booting. Cloud streaming is not a substitute either because a streamed flat-screen session does not expose the local headset as the simulator's OpenXR device.
Choose Windows when you want dependable flying and repeatable troubleshooting. Choose Linux with Proton only when experimentation is the goal and you are prepared for headset-specific setup, broken updates and no official support.
