When the wind of westernization hit Estonia, its flag carrier airline Estonian Air acquired four smaller 26-passenger Yakovlev Yak-40s to expand its fleet adequately to meet the growing passenger requirements.
The Russian-made Yaks were straight-winged tri-jet aircraft that guaranteed a smooth fly over short distances. As a regional airline that fed into the Scandinavian Airlines System network, Estonian Air found the classic passenger version of Yak-40 to be very beneficial to maintain scheduled services in a host of vital routes.
The cash-strapped airlines is holding out a lot of promise under the dynamic leadership of new CEO Jan Palmer. Incidentally, Estonian Air retired the Yaks, along with a few Tupolev Tu-134s, by the end of 1996.
