This freeware package features the iconic Airbus A380 in a Qantas livery, meticulously designed for enthusiasts of the “superjumbo” experience. Created by Project Airbus, it integrates advanced animations, authentic flight dynamics, and numerous custom XML elements. Repaint textures come courtesy of John Tavendale, ensuring a high-fidelity finish. Although originally developed with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 in mind, this version is also compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Below, you will find additional insights into installation, special capabilities, and credit acknowledgments.

Detailed Model Characteristics

Project Airbus A380-800 includes exquisitely modeled visuals, ranging from parallel landing gear bogies to elaborate control surface droop. The engineering team has included sophisticated flight dynamics that mirror real-world operational parameters, complemented by independently coded animations for cockpit systems and external lighting.

Airline Background

Qantas Airways is recognized as one of Australia’s leading carriers, having embraced the A380 to expand its long-haul fleet. The combination of Australian heritage and the Airbus A380’s ample capacity gives Qantas an edge in intercontinental travel. Enthusiasts can replicate the airline’s long-range operations using this virtual model.

Installation Procedure

  1. Unzip the downloaded folder directly into your main simulator directory (commonly found under the “FSX” root folder).
  2. Confirm the aircraft is listed in your aircraft selection menu when launching Microsoft Flight Simulator X or Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.

Note: The model was primarily constructed for FS9, yet it operates reliably under FSX in most circumstances.

Technical Highlights

  • Wing Flex Simulation: Dynamic wing bending responding to aircraft load and control inputs.
  • Drooping Control Surfaces: Surfaces position themselves realistically when engines are powered down.
  • Parallel Bogies: Independent bogie suspension aligning with ground contact for a true-to-life stance.
  • Fan Behavior: Animated engine fans feature start-up, shutdown, and windmilling effects, including fan inertia.
  • Custom-Tuned Spoilers: Ground spoilers deploy automatically during landing roll, reflecting actual flight procedures.
  • Improved Gear and Flaps: Refined animation cycles for smooth, consistent motion.
  • Strobe Logic: Double strobing hard-coded for enhanced realism when flying at night.
  • Pack Vents and Probes: Operational pack vents and animated sensor probes for deeper immersion.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D livery / repaint
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Add livery to base aircraft folder

Place the texture folder (typically texture.{airline}) inside FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes\{base-aircraft}\.
  3. Update aircraft.cfg

Open the base aircraft.cfg in Notepad. Add a new [fltsim.X] section per the readme.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
