How to install Steam on Windows 11

1. Check the PC first. You need an administrator account or administrator credentials, an internet connection and enough free storage. Steam itself is relatively small, but simulators and their downloadable content can occupy far more space.
2. Download the official installer. Open Steam’s own website in your browser and select its installation option. Avoid download mirrors and bundled installers; the file should be named SteamSetup.exe.
3. Verify and run the file. Open the downloaded installer and accept User Account Control only after Windows identifies Valve as the publisher. If the publisher is missing or unexpected, cancel and obtain a fresh copy from the official source.
4. Choose the Steam client folder. The default folder under Program Files (x86) is suitable for most PCs. Avoid OneDrive-synchronised folders, network locations and removable drives for the client itself.
5. Complete the initial update. Steam downloads the latest client files when first opened. Do not interrupt this stage or shut down Windows while files are being applied.
6. Sign in or create an account. Use the account that owns your games. Complete any email or Steam Guard verification requested by the client.

2. Select Install. Choose the Steam library drive and review the reported storage requirement.
3. Allow extra working space. Downloads may need additional room while compressed files are unpacked and updated.
4. Wait for prerequisites. On first launch, Steam may install required runtimes or open a publisher’s separate launcher.
5. Launch the game from Steam. This ensures Steam can apply updates, verify ownership and record the correct installation location.

Why will Steam not install on Windows 11?

Steam installation failures on Windows 11 are usually caused by S mode, missing administrator permission, security software, a damaged installer or a blocked initial update.

• Windows 11 is in S mode: S mode blocks traditional desktop installers such as Steam. Check the Activation section of Windows Settings. Leaving S mode is a permanent change, so understand the effect before proceeding.
• The installer does nothing: Restart Windows, confirm that another Steam installer is not running in Task Manager, then run the verified installer as administrator once.
• Windows shows a security warning: Do not bypass it blindly. Delete the file and download it again from Steam’s official source, then confirm the publisher before running it.
• Steam cannot update or says it must be online: Set Windows date and time automatically, temporarily disconnect any VPN or proxy, restart the network connection and ensure the signed Steam client is allowed through the firewall.
• Access is denied: Use the default installation folder or another folder owned by your Windows account. If Controlled folder access blocks Steam, grant the verified application permission instead of disabling Windows security globally.
• A previous installation is damaged: Fully exit Steam before reinstalling it over the same client folder. If games already exist, back up steamapps and userdata; deleting steamapps removes locally installed games.

Why is a Steam download stuck at 0 B/s?

A Steam download can show 0 B/s while downloaded data is being unpacked to disk, especially with large simulators. Check the disk activity shown on Steam’s Downloads page before cancelling it.

If both network and disk activity remain idle, pause and resume the download, restart Steam and confirm that the destination drive has spare working space. Clearing Steam’s download cache from its Downloads settings is a later troubleshooting step because it restarts the client and may require you to sign in again.

Can I move Steam games to another drive later?

Yes. Use Steam’s Storage settings to add another library and move supported games without downloading them again.

1. Add or select the destination library in Steam’s Storage settings.
2. Select the installed game and choose the move option.
3. Verify the game afterwards if Steam reports missing or changed files.
