Is MSFS 2024 better on PS5 or a high-end PC?

Ian Stephens
In short

Our MSFS 2024 PS5 vs PC comparison covers graphics, frame rate, add-ons, controls, VR and value, including PS5 Pro and high-end PC caveats.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 delivers the same core simulation on PS5, but a high-end PC is the stronger platform for image quality, frame-rate flexibility, VR, specialist controls and add-ons. PS5 is the better-value, simpler choice; PS5 Pro narrows the graphics gap without matching a well-configured premium PC.

MSFS 2024 on PS5 vs high-end PC at a glance

The aircraft, world and underlying flight simulation are fundamentally the same, but each platform offers a different ceiling for graphics, hardware and expansion.

How much better are graphics and performance on a high-end PC?

A properly balanced high-end PC can render MSFS 2024 at higher detail and with more flexible frame-rate targets than PS5. The difference is clearest in cockpit display sharpness, distant terrain, object density, shadows, busy airports, VR and high-refresh or multi-display setups.

PC does not guarantee flawless performance. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 can become limited by the CPU's main thread around detailed airports, complex airliners and heavy traffic, so fitting a flagship graphics card alongside a weaker processor is a common and expensive mistake. Our practical PC hardware and graphics targets for MSFS 2024 explain where extra spending produces a visible benefit.

PS5 removes most of that tuning. It uses a console profile designed around fixed hardware, while PC lets the user trade Terrain Level of Detail, Object Level of Detail, clouds, traffic and render scaling against smoothness. An output labelled 4K does not necessarily mean both platforms render identical internal detail.

Scenery streaming can also make either version look soft or incomplete when the connection is congested. That is a bandwidth or server-delivery problem, not proof that the console or graphics card is underpowered.

Are PC add-ons and flight controls better?

Yes: PC has the decisive advantage for third-party aircraft, freeware, external applications and specialist cockpit hardware. It can use the Community folder, including compatible files from our MSFS freeware and mod library, alongside in-sim Marketplace content.

PS5 has no user-accessible Community folder and cannot run the companion executables used by some advanced add-ons, flight-planning tools or cockpit integrations. Do not assume every aircraft bought on another platform transfers to PlayStation; availability, licensing and entitlement can differ by product.

The same warning applies to hardware. A yoke or throttle having a USB connector does not make it PS5-compatible. Console buyers should confirm explicit PlayStation and MSFS 2024 support before purchasing, whereas PC users have a much broader range of yokes, pedals, throttle quadrants, switch panels and head-tracking equipment.

Do PS5 Pro and PSVR2 close the PC gap?

PS5 Pro narrows the console graphics gap, while PSVR2 adds a dedicated console VR option, but neither removes the PC's greater flexibility. The Pro is best understood as the premium console version, not as an equivalent to unrestricted PC settings and upgrades.

PSVR2 support is delivered through a free update during 2026. If VR is the deciding factor, confirm that update is installed on the build you will use; our PS5 and PS5 Pro release details cover the platform-specific position.

A high-end PC remains preferable for choosing among compatible headsets, adjusting each graphics setting and upgrading hardware later. VR is exceptionally demanding, however, so even premium PCs usually require compromises in render resolution, level of detail or traffic.

Which version should you choose?

Choose PS5 for convenience and value; choose a high-end PC for maximum fidelity, expansion and control.

  • Choose standard PS5 if you want an uncomplicated living-room simulator, are happy with DualSense or supported console peripherals, and do not need Community-folder mods or external utilities.
  • Choose PS5 Pro if you want the strongest PlayStation presentation on a high-resolution display but still prefer console simplicity.
  • Choose a high-end PC if you use demanding aircraft, large add-on airports, specialist controls, multiple displays, VR, freeware or external flight-simulation software.

For a simmer buying an entire system solely for MSFS 2024, PS5 offers much better cost efficiency. For someone who already owns a balanced high-end PC—or intends to build a detailed home cockpit—the PC version is the clear long-term choice.
