This upgrade unveils a fresh set of textures for the renowned short-haul cargo aircraft, enhancing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 with the distinctive G-HDBU scheme once operated by H&D Aviation. It is designed to be used exclusively with the freeware base model (PINKVAN.ZIP) from Dan Watkins. Here, enthusiasts will find precise detailing that captures the Skyvan’s boxy airframe and short-field performance capabilities. Repaint work is courtesy of Sean Doran.
Distinctive Aspects of the G-HDBU Variation
The Shorts Skyvan, originally created by Short Brothers, gained popularity for its robust construction, impressive cargo hold, and the ability to operate on short airstrips. This particular G-HDBU repaint pays homage to H&D Aviation’s usage of the aircraft, reflecting the correct lines, fuselage markings, and color accents. The model by Dan Watkins accurately replicates the aircraft’s powerful twin engined layout and unique tailplane configuration. Operators often employed this box-shaped aircraft for hauling cargo and undertaking specialized missions in constrained airports.
Visual Elements
Look at the distinctive rectangular fuselage cross-section and robust main wings.
Installation Procedure
- Locate and install the base model (PINKVAN.ZIP) into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. Ensure that the correct “Skyvan” folder from Dan Watkins’ freeware pack is present.
- Extract the newly provided texture folder into: Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\Skyvan. Retain the name ghdbu for proper functionality.
- Update the aircraft configuration file by assigning the next sequential number to the [fltsim.x] entry shown below. Insert these lines at the end of your aircraft.cfg to recognize the G-HDBU repaint:
[fltsim.x] title=Skyvan G-HDBU sim=Skyvan model=nc panel= sound= texture=ghdbu kb_checklists= kb_reference=Skyvan_ref ui_manufacturer=Shorts ui_type=Skyvan ui_variation=H&D Aviation G-HDBU atc_id= atc_airline= description=Shorts Skyvan H&D Aviation
Key Technical Details
This cargo carrier, distinguished by its large rear cargo door, high-mounted twin tailfins, and rugged landing gear, is often used for short takeoff and landing scenarios. Thanks to the freeware model provided by Dan Watkins, simmers can explore realistic flight characteristics and become familiar with the aircraft’s reliable twin turboprop configuration. Meanwhile, Sean Doran’s repaint adds accurate coloration, insignia placement, and aircraft designation for true-to-life authenticity.
