How do I push back an aircraft in a flight simulator?

To push back an aircraft in a flight simulator, set the parking brake while the tug connects, release it when instructed, select the required direction, then stop the tug and reapply the brake. The exact command differs between Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane, and some add-on aircraft use their own ground menu.

How do you push back step by step?

The reliable sequence is to connect the tug first, release the brakes only when instructed, move at idle thrust, then stop and secure the aircraft before disconnecting.

  1. Secure the aircraft. Stop on the stand with the throttles at idle and the parking brake set. If you are flying with human ATC, obtain push-and-start clearance before moving.
  2. Prepare the ground configuration. Close doors and disconnect the jetway or other equipment when required by the aircraft checklist. Remove wheel chocks through the EFB or ground-services menu only while the parking brake is holding the aircraft.
  3. Select one pushback system. Use either the simulator’s tug, the aircraft’s EFB function or a pushback add-on. Running two systems together commonly causes a stationary, duplicated or uncontrollable tug.
  4. Request and connect the tug. Wait for visual or voice confirmation that it is attached. Releasing the brake too early can let the aircraft roll before the tug is ready.
  5. Release the parking brake. Start pushback through the active menu or control binding. Keep the throttles at idle and the rudder or tiller centred unless the chosen tool explicitly uses those axes for steering.
  6. Choose the direction. Command a straight push or the required tail direction. Watch both wings, the tail and nearby ground equipment rather than concentrating only on the nose.
  7. Stop and disconnect. Issue the stop command, set the parking brake when requested and wait until the tug and any simulated bypass pin are clear before taxiing.

A tug does not require the aircraft’s engines to be running. Airliners often begin engine start during pushback according to their checklist, while light aircraft are normally towed with the engine stopped.

Which pushback control does each simulator use?

There is no universal pushback binding, so use the simulator’s ground-services system unless the aircraft documentation directs you to a custom EFB or cockpit control.

Which way does the aircraft turn during pushback?

Most pushback controls describe the direction of the tail, not the direction in which you want the nose to point.

  • Tail left: the nose swings right.
  • Tail right: the nose swings left.
  • Straight back: keep the rudder and tiller centred unless the pushback tool says otherwise.

A mistake we see constantly is selecting left because the pilot wants the nose to finish left, even though the command means tail left. Path-planning tools may instead show the nose route or complete aircraft outline, so check the preview before starting.

Why is pushback not working?

Most failed pushbacks are caused by brake input, wheel chocks, unavailable stand services or competing pushback systems rather than a broken tug.

  • Parking brake or toe brakes: release the parking brake only after connection and check that noisy pedal axes are not applying continuous brake input. A small dead zone can cure this.
  • Wheel chocks or ground lock: remove them through the aircraft’s EFB or ground menu. Complex add-on aircraft may ignore the simulator’s global command until their own ground equipment is cleared.
  • Jetway or service equipment: disconnect anything the aircraft or scenery requires before movement.
  • Control conflict: disable duplicate keyboard, controller and joystick assignments. Search the control settings for pushback, tug and ground-service bindings.
  • Two active pushback systems: stop the built-in tug before starting an EFB or add-on service, and do not let two tools control the nosewheel together.
  • Scenery or stand problem: test at a default parking stand with a default aircraft. If that works, the original airport position or custom aircraft is the likely cause.

Powerback is not a normal substitute for a tug. Reverse thrust creates jet-blast and debris hazards, and many simulator aircraft either prevent it or model it poorly. Use powerback only when the simulated aircraft’s documented procedure explicitly permits it.
