Since 1945 is created based air 188 on the ground of the French Somali Coast, which later became French territory of the Afars and the Issas. The only unit that is stationed there ELA 51 EOM 88 becomes effective 31 December 1958. This unit will use 52 Junker, then MD 315 Flamant. From 1959, the old Junker are replaced by C-47 Dakota, while some that arrive in Djibouti MH 1521 Broussard. The first helicopters made their appearance in 1963 in the form of two H 19, replaced in 1967 by H 34 most powerful and Alouette II. In October 1967, the unit takes into account the first Noratlas. Subsequently, several of these machines will be affected especially camouflage based brown and sand perfectly suited to the location. In 1970, the MOC changes its name to the GAMOM 88 (mixed air group). Continuously, the small Noratlas crisscross the territory, but also the Red Sea, Ethiopia, Somalia, the coast of Madagascar, and they participate many humanitarian missions. Then, in 1972, the last heavy helicopters H 34 are removed, the unit component then Noratlas addition, Alouette II and MH 1521 Broussard. On 1 April 1976, when the reorganization of units based overseas, the GAMOM changes again to become the naming ETOM 88. Then, the following year, following the independence of the new Republic of Djibouti Air Force Base Air Detachment 188 becomes 188. On this occasion, some Noratlas are transferred to the air force of the young state. In July 1983, the last of ETOM Noratlas disappear, replaced posted by Transall AND the 61st of Orleans, who continue to work alongside the Alouette III. Finally, in 1994, The ETOM 88, who had never received name of tradition, is given the name "Larzac".
