FSX Operation Odyssey Dawn Flight Plans

Flight Plans--Operation Odyssey Dawn, Libya 19-30 March 2011. By S. Peterson.

Operation Odyssey Dawn (or British Operation Ellamy, or Canadian Operation Mobile, or French Operation Harmattan) commenced following UN Resolution 1973 which called for a No-Fly Zone to protect Libyan civilians from Government air strikes. This operation ran from 19 March 2011 to 31 March 2011, after which it was taken over by NATO Operation Unified Protector. The flight plans in this package cover only the Odyssey Dawn period from 18 - 30 March 2011, including initial deployment flights and also a bonus earlier couple of sorties flown by RAF C-130s on 26 February 2011 to evacuate Western workers in Libya.

1. The flight plans here were created using Tim Arnot's Plan G software and with Multiplayer in mind. The routes and waypoints are not deemed to be accurate in any way and strike waypoints have not been placed specifically. The plans were put together simply from web research into various sorties reported by the media - there are no doubt many other plans which have not been included.

2. In order to use any AN (French Navy) or USMC plans, you will need to put the two .bgl files into your Addon Scenery/Scenery folder. This creates empty airports where the French Naval vessel Charles de Gaulle and the USS Kearsarge may have been. Use AI Carriers to place carriers at those waypoints - recommend either the Abacus Carrier Strike Force models (CdG and USS Bonhomme Richard in place of the Kearsarge) or the freeware Clemenceau.

3. Flight plans are ordered according to Air Force and some describe both the aircraft type and start airbase. Air Force codes are as follows:

ALA - Armee de l'Air (French Air Force)
AMI - Aeronautica Militare Italiana (Italian Air Force)
AN - Aeronavale (French Navy)
BAC - Belgian Air Component
HAF - Hellenic (Greek) Air Force
NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organisation
QEAF - Qatari Emiri Air Force
RAF - Royal Air Force
RCAF - Royal Canadian Air Force
RDAF - Royal Danish Air Force
RNLAF - Royal Netherlands Air Force
RNoAF - Royal Norwegian Air Force
SPAF - Spanish Air Force
UAEAF - United Arab Emirates Air Force
USAF - United States Air Force
USMC - United States Marine Corps
USN - United States Navy

4. Several plans are joint missions with other forces (usually labelled as such) or require supporting plans, such as tankers for the long range USAF and RAF strike flights. If multiplaying joint flights, study the plans carefully for RV waypoints etc.

5. NFZ flight plans are No-Fly Zone CAPs which in theory should be recycled for a few hours at a time, with tanker top-ups when necessary. NFZ plans will often have up to four different plans for each zone - this is to ensure maximum coverage throughout the day. Many other flight plans should also be recycled, like AWACs, JSTARS, Tankers, Maritime Patrols, EW and PSYOPs plans. But you guys can figure out how best to manage all of that.

6. I've made a lot of stuff up just to make everything work - for instance the tanker and AWACS tracks. Generally speaking, boom tankers occupy the Western Med track while hose tankers look after the Eastern Med track. Delta and Bravo tracks can be occupied by any tanker and the ALA, RCAF and SPAF tankers have their own plans. Most plans have tanking waypoints which may or may not be used. They are ordered to follow a tanker track (eg clockwise for the Western Med and anti-clockwise for the Eastern Med).

7. The plans were designed with altitudes built into each waypoint to assist with deconfliction. Not sure if they show up in FSX itself, but if multiplaying, it might pay to get an AWACS or JSTARS up to manage traffic anyway.

8. This is all for a bit of fun so I haven't spent too much time checking the plans over - if you run out of fuel or have a mid-air, don't blame me - you're the pilot afterall!

9. Feel free to play around with the original plans if you want to - but only re-release them if you've actually made improvements!
