Flight Simulator X Prepar3D

This custom package brings a unique take on the classic Vought F4U1A Corsair into Microsoft Flight Simulator X, featuring WWII-inspired nose art titled “Sweet Dee.” Developed by Guy Hulin (base model) with fictional repaint work by Mark Rooks of RSDG, this freeware release showcases detailed texture enhancements and a refined alpha channel for a dynamic external finish.

Aircraft Profile and Special Livery

The original Vought F4U1A Corsair, often identified by its inverted gull wings, provided formidable service during World War II. Its naval heritage, coupled with the iconic silhouette, set it apart in the Pacific Theater. This particular repaint, dubbed “Sweet Dee”, pays homage to period-style pinup aesthetics and emphasizes a strong vintage theme. The newly integrated shine effect uses an updated alpha layer, offering a polished exterior that interacts with in-sim lighting.

Technical Aspects and Included Components

This freeware package offers:

  • Fully integrated texture files with revised alpha shine.
  • Essential configuration files (CFG, air file, model folder, sound folder, panel folder, and texture folder).
  • Custom gauges that must be placed in your simulator’s gauges directory.

By keeping everything self-contained, enthusiasts can enjoy a complete Corsair experience without requiring additional third-party downloads.

Installation Steps

  1. Unzip the downloaded archive to a temporary location.
  2. Move the "Sweet Dee" folder containing the core files (CFG, Airfile, Model, Sound, Panel, Textures) into your main aircraft directory. Typically found at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes.
  3. Copy all gauge files into the simulator’s Gauges folder.

Ensure each of the six subfolders (CFG, Airfile, Sound, Model, Panel, and Texture) remains intact without being renamed or relocated outside of the aircraft folder.

Author Credits and Remarks

All textures and FSX updates come courtesy of Mark "Fire Ball" Rooks from RSDG, who added WWII nostalgia through the eye-catching nose art. The groundwork for this F4U series is credited to Guy Hulin, whose base model underpins this rendition. Special messages shared here were originally crafted by Col. Robert K. Suchke, reflecting unique perspectives on Airborne forces and various military units.

Below is an excerpt that highlights the spirit behind the creation:

“And the Lord God spoke forth unto the heavens and said ‘Let there be Airborne.’ The earth trembled; skies filled with parachutes. God looked and saw they were good. They were Airborne. Then God spoke and reasoned that there be Rangers; darkness fell, the mountains quaked, and fearsome warriors emerged. Finally, there were Special Forces, bringing order with camouflage and readiness. God looked and deemed them exceptional. But from the abyss rose those who remained in indecision. They were LEGS!”

Requires dependencies

This add-on may require the following files to function properly. If this is a repaint, the dependency below is likely the base aircraft package.

How to install this mod
