Learn how to flare a Cessna 172 in X-Plane using the right speed, sight picture and control inputs, with fixes for floating and bouncing.
To flare a Cessna 172 in X-Plane, arrive over the threshold on speed and aligned. As the round-out starts, close the remaining throttle, raise the nose enough to arrest most of the descent, look towards the far end, then hold off with increasing back-pressure until the main wheels touch first while keeping straight with rudder.
The flare has two connected parts: the round-out, which reduces the descent rate, and the hold-off, during which the aircraft slows and settles onto its main wheels. The technique is the same in X-Plane 11 and 12, although the exact sight picture varies with the aircraft model, loading, field of view and pilot-eye position.

A repeatable flare begins with a stable approach rather than a last-second pull on the control column.
- Stabilise the final approach. Set the landing flap, trim the aircraft, hold the correct speed and keep the runway aiming point nearly stationary in the windscreen. If alignment, speed or descent rate is still changing close to the runway, go around instead of trying to repair everything during the flare. - Move your eyes along the runway. As the threshold and aiming point disappear beneath the nose, shift attention towards the far third or far end of the runway. Staring immediately over the cowling makes height and sink rate much harder to judge on a monitor.
- Begin the round-out. At roughly 10–15 feet above the runway, smoothly close any remaining throttle and apply gentle back-pressure. The objective is to reduce the descent to a shallow settling path, not to pitch abruptly to a memorised attitude.
- Hold the aircraft off. As airspeed falls, add back-pressure in tiny increments to prevent an immediate touchdown. Do not freeze the elevator position: progressively raise the nose while allowing the aeroplane to settle. Keep the longitudinal axis aligned with rudder and use into-wind aileron to stop sideways drift.
- Touch down on the main wheels. Maintain the landing attitude as the mains contact the runway, then lower the nosewheel gently as elevator effectiveness decreases. Retain the appropriate crosswind correction during the rollout.
Use elevator, not repeated bursts of nose-up trim, to perform the hold-off. Excessive trim can produce a strong pitch-up when full power is applied during a go-around.
What speed and height should you use for the flare?
For many Cessna 172 variants with landing flap selected, the published normal-approach range is approximately 55–65 KIAS; around 60 KIAS on short final is a useful calm-weather starting point. Always use the checklist supplied with the particular stock or add-on aircraft, because flap configuration, weight and modelled variant affect the correct speed.
Excess speed is the most common reason a C172 floats along the runway. Flying substantially slower than the specified range is not the cure: it leaves little energy for the round-out and can produce a high sink rate.
The 10–15-foot flare height is only a reference. Use the runway's apparent expansion and your changing sight picture rather than the barometric altimeter, which is not precise enough for judging the last few feet. In gusty conditions, apply only the speed adjustment recommended for that aircraft rather than carrying a large arbitrary margin.
Why is the C172 flare harder in X-Plane?
X-Plane removes much of the peripheral vision, depth perception and physical acceleration that real pilots use near the runway.
- Pilot-eye position: Set a believable cockpit viewpoint and keep it unchanged while practising. Moving the camera alters the apparent nose attitude and flare height.
- Field of view: An excessively wide view makes the runway appear smaller and more distant. Choose a view appropriate for the monitor size and viewing distance rather than copying a universal number.
- Control calibration: Check that the pitch axis moves smoothly without noise and that the throttle can reach idle. Use only enough dead zone or response adjustment to control hardware jitter.
- Visual smoothness: Uneven frame delivery makes the runway expansion harder to read. Reduce demanding graphics options if the view becomes jerky on short final.

What causes floating, ballooning and bouncing?
Most poor C172 landings come from excess speed, an abrupt pitch change or trying to force an unstable aeroplane onto the runway.

When should you go around during the flare?
Go around when the C172 balloons substantially, bounces hard, begins porpoising, drifts beyond safe correction or will not touch down with enough runway remaining.
- Apply full power smoothly. Maintain directional control and arrest the descent without an abrupt pitch change.
- Establish the climb. Set the correct climb attitude and airspeed while keeping the aeroplane aligned with the runway.
- Retract flap in stages. Follow the aircraft's checklist and avoid removing all flap close to the ground, which can cause a sudden loss of lift.
