This freeware release brings a meticulously adapted Virgin Atlantic Airbus A380 package into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, featuring ProMX enhancements courtesy of A. Asensio and original design elements by Camil Valiquette. Aircraft animations, including engine fan rotation and thrust reversers, have been updated to function correctly in this version. Enthusiasts will appreciate that approximately 99% of the dynamic elements are preserved for a smooth and visually accurate experience in the simulator.
Technical Refinements for This Variant
The developers ensured that the model (.mdl) underwent key modifications to achieve compatibility with the FS2004 game engine. These changes focus on maintaining realistic animation timing while ensuring all major control surfaces respond accurately to pilot inputs. This Airbus A380 rendition also mirrors important visual cues such as nacelle alignment, spoiler deployment, and landing gear movement.
In-Flight Sneak Peek
Key Operational Notes
Virgin Atlantic is known for its widebody fleet serving international routes, and the real-world Airbus A380 is a double-deck, long-range airliner manufactured by Airbus. In this specific simulated version, precise thrust application is crucial for takeoff. Setting N1 to around 85-90% or opting for TOGA thrust, depending on fuel load, ensures optimal runway departure performance.
Optimal Spot View Distance
To achieve the best external viewing angles, adjust your spot view radius to approximately 666 ft. Using the default 210 ft camera position might be too close for properly appreciating the full airframe.
Installation Instructions
- Use a reliable decompression tool (such as WinZip) to extract all files directly into your “Aircraft” directory within your FS2004 root folder.
Important: On first load, you may see a prompt indicating “Aircraft not fully compatible.…” Select “NO” to retain the correct landing gear animations. If “YES” is inadvertently chosen and the gear disappears, simply revisit this prompt or reinstall if needed.
Additional Implementation Details
- The custom Airbus A380 panel integrated here is authored by A. Asensio and is tailored for a user-friendly interface.
- Appreciation goes to Mitsushi Yutaka from Project Open Sky for developing essential code that enables titles for the gear animation and synchronized landing light behavior.
- Acknowledgment is also given to Mike Crosthwaite, creator of SDL Edit, for aiding model editing.
- This model is strictly freeware and is intended purely for private, non-commercial enjoyment within the simulation community.
The aircraft’s design, including paint and visual effects, is attributed to Camil Valiquette. Together, these contributions deliver a polished and faithful simulation of the Virgin Atlantic Airbus A380. Those who download and install this package can experience the distinctive attributes of both the airline and the jet’s airframe in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 with high fidelity and immersive detail, consistent with the standards set by Fly Away Simulation.
