Steam may not work on a Chromebook because ChromeOS cannot run the Windows Steam client directly, the official Steam for Chromebook beta ended on 1 January 2026, and many models use ARM processors or restricted Linux containers. The workable choices are Linux Steam on a compatible x86-64 model, remote streaming, or a native/browser alternative.
This is a general Steam and ChromeOS compatibility issue rather than a fault with one particular flight simulator. The right solution depends on which Steam installation method you were trying to use.
Why did Steam stop working on ChromeOS?
Steam stopped working through the official ChromeOS route because the Steam for Chromebook beta programme concluded on 1 January 2026. Games installed through that beta are no longer playable using the retired feature, so reinstalling its launcher, changing ChromeOS channels or performing a factory reset will not restore it.
Before deleting an old installation, check whether each game's saves were synchronised with Steam Cloud. Cloud saving is controlled per game and is not a guaranteed backup of every profile, add-on or configuration file.
The Steam website still works in Chrome for account and store management, but a browser cannot install desktop Steam games. Likewise, the Android Steam Mobile app manages an account; it is not a ChromeOS game client.
Can you install Steam through Chromebook Linux?
You can sometimes run the Linux Steam client inside ChromeOS's Linux development environment, but this is a separate workaround rather than a continuation of the discontinued Chromebook beta.
- Processor: The standard Linux Steam client requires an x86-64 Intel or AMD environment. Run
uname -min the Linux Terminal:x86_64is suitable, whileaarch64orarm64identifies an ARM Chromebook that cannot run the client natively. - Linux availability: Search ChromeOS Settings for the Linux development environment. If it is absent or disabled, the Chromebook may be incompatible or controlled by a school or employer.
- Storage: Steam and its games need space inside the Linux container. Cheap Chromebooks often run out of internal storage before a substantial game finishes downloading.
- Graphics support: The virtualised graphics stack must expose the OpenGL or Vulkan features required by the game. A processor being compatible does not guarantee that its integrated graphics or ChromeOS drivers are.
- Game support: Native Linux games are the best candidates. Windows-only releases depend on Proton and may still fail because of launchers, anti-cheat systems, DRM or unsupported graphics features.
Developer Mode is not the same thing as the supported Linux development environment, and enabling it does not solve an ARM or graphics incompatibility. Avoid random chrome://flags changes and firmware modifications presented as universal Steam fixes.
How do you troubleshoot Steam inside the Linux container?
The safest troubleshooting order is to verify the Chromebook's architecture and Linux environment before changing Steam itself.
- Confirm the installation type. A file named like a Windows installer will not run directly on ChromeOS. Use the Linux Steam package only on an x86-64 Chromebook.
- Update both systems. Install the available ChromeOS update, restart, then update the Linux container with
sudo apt updatefollowed bysudo apt upgrade. - Check free space. Leave room for Steam's update files, shader caches and the unpacked game, not just the advertised download size.
- Keep the library inside Linux. Libraries placed under shared ChromeOS paths such as
/mnt/chromeos, on an SD card or on an external drive can encounter execution, permission and filesystem problems. Test with the default library inside the Linux container first. - Launch Steam from the Terminal. Running
steamthere can expose dependency, architecture or graphics errors that disappear when the graphical launcher closes. - Test a small native Linux game. If that works but a Windows game immediately returns to the Play button, investigate that game's Proton compatibility rather than repeatedly reinstalling Steam.

Will Proton run Windows flight simulators on a Chromebook?
No—Proton does not guarantee that a Windows flight simulator will run on ChromeOS. It translates Windows interfaces for Linux, but it cannot supply missing GPU performance, unrestricted USB access or full compatibility with every launcher and add-on installer.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 have no Chromebook release and are not realistic local installations for ordinary Chromebook hardware.
