Fly anywhere in Microsoft Flight Simulator using Free Flight or the World Map. Learn how to start, roam without a route, and fix common spawn issues.
Yes. Microsoft Flight Simulator lets you fly across a digital recreation of the entire Earth, including remote land, oceans, polar regions and thousands of airports. In MSFS 2024, use Free Flight; in MSFS 2020, use the World Map. Scenery accuracy varies, and a custom map start is usually airborne.
How do you start free roam in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Use Free Flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 or the World Map in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020; neither mode requires a mission or formal route.
- Open the planning map. Choose Free Flight in MSFS 2024 or World Map in MSFS 2020.
- Select an aircraft. Match it to the intended runway, terrain or water operation.
- Find the location. Search by airport name, ICAO code or recognised point of interest, or zoom in and select the map manually. Coordinate formats and search support differ between versions.
- Assign the departure. Make sure the chosen point is set as the departure, not the arrival.
- Choose the start type. Select parking for a ground start, a runway for immediate departure, or a custom point to begin airborne nearby.
- Leave the destination empty. Add one only when you want the simulator to generate a route.
- Set the conditions and launch. Adjust time, weather, traffic, multiplayer and assistance options as required.
Not every landmark is searchable by name. For an exact address or other unlisted spot, use a nearby airport or map coordinates; our guide to reaching a precise location in a flight simulator explains the practical method.
Do you need a destination or flight plan?
No. Destinations, VFR or IFR routes and ATC clearances are optional in free flight. You can take off, change direction, land elsewhere and continue, although you must track your position with the cockpit GPS, navigation displays or map tools.
Free Flight in MSFS 2024 is separate from Career Mode: it requires no career unlock and does not advance missions, companies or reputation. MSFS 2020 has no equivalent built-in career progression.
Can you spawn, take off and land anywhere?
You can start over almost any selectable map position and fly without regional boundaries. The planet is represented at approximately real-world scale, as covered in our guide to the simulator's global scale and route distances.
| Starting point | Typical result |
|---|---|
| Runway | On the ground and ready for departure |
| Gate, ramp or parking stand | Ground start, often cold and dark |
| Custom non-airport point | Airborne start near the selected position |
The exact aircraft state depends on the aircraft and assistance settings. Off-airport landings are possible, but slopes, trees, buildings, traffic, uneven surfaces and collision boundaries can make clear-looking ground unusable. There is no guaranteed parking, fuel, ATC or ground service. Use a bush aircraft for rough strips, a helicopter for confined sites, or a floatplane or amphibian for water.
Why does scenery quality vary by location?
Worldwide scenery combines aerial imagery, elevation data, generated buildings, vegetation and specially modelled assets. Some cities use detailed 3D coverage; our explanation of how photogrammetry affects city detail shows why results vary so sharply.
MSFS 2024 relies more heavily on streamed world data, while MSFS 2020 can fall back to installed offline scenery. Without usable online data, terrain and ground textures are generally less detailed.
- Blurry or generic scenery: check that online world data is enabled and the connection is stable.
- Simplified remote areas: source imagery or elevation data may be older, lower-resolution or incomplete.
- Missing airports: check map filters and installed content; some airfields are absent from the simulator database.
No graphics setting can recreate detail missing from the source data. Compatible MSFS scenery and airport add-ons may improve a particular destination.
Why does free roam start in the wrong place or state?
The usual cause is an incorrectly assigned map point, unsuitable spawn type or active assistance option.
- The airport becomes the destination: select it again and assign it specifically as the departure.
- You start on the runway with engines running: choose a gate, ramp or parking position. Small airfields may have none.
- You start in the air: this is normal for a custom non-airport departure.
- A route keeps appearing: remove the arrival and all waypoints before launching.
- The aircraft flies itself: disable AI piloting assistance for take-off, navigation and landing.
Are any countries or regions blocked?
Free Flight does not ordinarily place invisible national borders around the globe. You can overfly countries, oceans and remote regions even where scenery is generic. Career missions and structured activities may restrict available aircraft or destinations, while real-world restricted airspace is not normally enforced as a blocked map area.
