For general flight simulation, treat Orlando International Airport NOTAMs as temporary amendments to the published airport information. They can close a runway, restrict a taxiway, withdraw an instrument approach component or identify work that may not be represented in your simulator’s scenery.
How do I search for current Orlando International NOTAMs?
- Open the official FAA NOTAM search service. Avoid cached search results and saved briefing pages because notices can be added, replaced or cancelled at short notice.
- Search for KMCO. If the service expects the three-letter domestic location identifier, enter
MCO. Do not confuse Orlando International with Orlando Executive Airport, whose identifier isKORL. - Set the correct flight period. Search for notices effective during the planned arrival, departure and taxi period, not merely those active when you perform the search. NOTAM times are normally shown in UTC.
- Include all relevant notice types. Review airport, runway, taxiway, apron, lighting, navigation-aid, communications and FDC notices. A filter limited to runway closures can hide an ILS outage or unavailable taxi route.

How do you decode a KMCO NOTAM?

Convert the UTC period for the actual date of the flight; Orlando’s UTC offset changes with daylight-saving time. A mistake we see constantly is reading EST after a NOTAM end time as Eastern Standard Time. In that position, EST means the ending time is estimated and the notice must later be cancelled or replaced.
Other common terms include U/S for unserviceable, WIP for work in progress, DLY for a repeating daily schedule, EXC for an exception, and PERM for a change intended to become permanent. Which KMCO NOTAMs matter in a flight simulator?
Apply every effective notice that changes the operation you intend to simulate, but recognise that the simulator may not reproduce the real-world condition automatically.
- Runway or taxiway closure: plan another runway or surface route even if the pavement remains visible and usable in the scenery.
- ILS or navaid outage: do not use the affected approach merely because the simulator still generates guidance. Select another available procedure if you are reproducing real operations.
- Lighting outage: assess whether the missing system is required for the planned night or low-visibility operation. The lights may still appear in older scenery.
- Construction or new pavement: a NOTAM may refer to a taxiway that your scenery predates. Use the safest route the scenery can represent; on an online ATC network, explain the mismatch and request amended taxi instructions.
- TFR or FDC restriction: check its horizontal boundary, altitude limits, effective period and exceptions rather than assuming an MCO destination is automatically exempt.
Casual offline flights can ignore real-world closures if that is the chosen scenario. For a present-day airline or online ATC session, honour operational NOTAMs wherever the simulator permits. The key is consistency: do not call a flight realistic while using a closed runway or an unavailable approach simply because the software allows it.
What if a NOTAM conflicts with the chart, ATIS or scenery?
A valid, effective NOTAM temporarily modifies the published chart or airport entry, while simulator scenery is only a representation and may come from a different date.
- Chart conflict: confirm that the NOTAM is effective for the flight time and has not been cancelled. The chart supplies the baseline; the NOTAM supplies the temporary change.

- Airport-data conflict: verify runway dimensions, services and remarks using the process for checking an airport in the FAA Chart Supplement, then apply effective NOTAM amendments.
- Scenery conflict: follow the NOTAM for procedural realism, but never taxi over missing or unsafe simulated ground. Request different routing if an online controller refers to infrastructure your scenery does not contain.
