Why is my joystick not working in IL-2 Cliffs of Dover?

Ian Stephens
In short

IL-2 Cliffs of Dover joystick not working? Fix Windows detection, axis bindings, Steam Input conflicts and control-profile problems.

A joystick usually fails in IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover because Windows cannot see it, the flight axes were assigned on the wrong controls tab, Steam Input or a virtual controller is intercepting it, or the saved profile no longer matches the device. Test it in Windows first, then rebind the axes and remove conflicts.

What should I check first?

Confirm that Windows receives live input before changing anything in Cliffs of Dover. Close the simulator, connect the joystick before launching it and use the following checks:

  1. Open the Windows controller panel: press Start, enter joy.cpl and open the result.
  2. Select the joystick and open Properties: move every axis and press several buttons. The indicators should respond smoothly.
  3. Fix any Windows-level failure: reconnect the controller directly to the PC, try another USB port and temporarily remove an unpowered hub. Install the manufacturer's driver only when that device requires one.
  4. Restart Cliffs of Dover: the simulator is most reliable when every controller is connected before it starts.

Our Windows joystick detection and input test covers the operating-system checks in more detail. Do not continue adjusting the simulator if joy.cpl shows no movement; that indicates a USB, driver or hardware problem.

How do I bind a joystick in Cliffs of Dover?

In Cliffs of Dover, flight axes must be assigned in the Axes section; button and keyboard assignments belong in Keys. Menu wording can differ slightly between the original release, Cliffs of Dover Blitz and Desert Wings – Tobruk, but the distinction between axes and buttons remains the same.

  1. Open the controls options and select the aircraft controls and Axes section.
  2. Assign Aileron: activate its assignment field, then move only the stick's left-right axis through a substantial part of its travel.
  3. Assign Elevator: repeat the process using only the forward-back axis.
  4. Assign Rudder and Throttle: move the pedals, twist grip or throttle lever intended for each command. With one throttle lever, use the overall throttle command; use engine-specific commands only for separate levers.
  5. Remove duplicate assignments: clear any unwanted axis shown against the same command, especially entries belonging to gamepads or virtual controllers.
  6. Check direction and response: invert an axis only if its movement is backwards. Start with modest or default dead-zone and sensitivity settings rather than masking a detection problem with large dead zones.
  7. Apply and save: test the aircraft, then reopen the controls screen to confirm that the assignments remain present.

The essential set is pitch, roll, yaw and throttle; our guide to essential flight-control assignments explains which secondary functions are useful and how to avoid mapping the same action twice.

Why does Windows detect the joystick but Cliffs of Dover does not?

If Windows detects the joystick but Cliffs of Dover ignores movement while assigning controls, another input layer is usually intercepting the device. Work through these causes one at a time:

  • Steam Input: for a conventional DirectInput joystick or HOTAS, disable Steam Input for Cliffs of Dover in the game's per-title controller properties, then restart Steam and the simulator. Leave it enabled only if your controller setup deliberately depends on Steam's translated device.
  • Virtual controllers: HOTAS configuration tools can expose both the physical controllers and a combined virtual device. Use one approach, not both. Disconnect or disable unused virtual gamepads while diagnosing the problem.
  • Other connected controllers: temporarily unplug spare gamepads, wheels and button boxes. Older controller systems can change device ordering when several devices are present.
  • Changed USB port or mode: Cliffs of Dover stores assignments against a device identity. Moving a controller to another port, switching its operating mode or changing virtual-device software can leave the old binding attached to a device that no longer exists.

Once the correct device accepts an axis assignment, reconnect additional controllers individually. This identifies the conflicting device without destroying a working setup.

Why do the controls bind correctly but not work in flight?

If the controls screen records movement, the hardware is working and the remaining fault is normally an assignment or cockpit-state issue. Make sure the mission is unpaused, any autopilot is disengaged and you occupy the pilot's position in a multi-crew aircraft.

Temporarily disable Anthropomorphic Control in the realism settings while testing. That option can reject combinations considered impossible for one pilot to operate at once; it should not prevent basic detection, but it can make an otherwise valid setup appear intermittent.

Ground handling can also be misleading. Several British aircraft represented in Cliffs of Dover use pneumatic differential braking: hold the wheel-brake control and apply rudder rather than expecting independent toe-brake axes to behave like those in a modern aircraft.

Why do my joystick bindings keep disappearing?

Bindings that vanish after closing the simulator usually indicate a user-profile write problem or a stale controller identity. Save the controls, close the simulator normally, reopen it and check whether the assignment survived.

If it did not, inspect the Cliffs of Dover user folder under Documents. The control configuration is commonly stored in confUser.ini; back up that file before changing it. Check that the file is not read-only and that folder protection or synchronisation software is not preventing the simulator from updating it.

Multiple editions or older installations may leave more than one Cliffs of Dover user folder. The correct folder is the one whose files receive new timestamps when the installed edition saves settings. Avoid copying an old control file into Blitz or another branch when device names have changed; rebuilding the four main axes is usually safer.

If the file appears corrupt, rename it while the simulator is closed and let the game create a clean configuration, then bind only aileron, elevator, rudder and throttle for a test. This resets all custom controls, so retain the backup. Verifying the game installation alone may not fix this fault because user control files are stored separately from the installed game files.
