Set up MSFS 2024 controller mapping correctly: create profiles, bind axes and buttons, fix conflicts, reverse inputs and save every preset.
To customise controller mapping in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, open Settings > Controls, select the exact device, duplicate a default preset, assign each command or axis, remove conflicting bindings, then save and apply the new profile. Keep separate profiles for aircraft that need different throttle, propeller, helicopter or camera controls.
How to map controller buttons and axes
The reliable method is to configure and test one physical device at a time.
- Connect the controller before opening Controls. MSFS 2024 should list each gamepad, joystick, yoke, throttle and pedal set separately. If a PC peripheral is missing, reconnect it and confirm that Windows detects it before restarting the simulator. Our joystick detection and initial axis setup instructions cover that process.
- Select the correct device. Choose the controller by its device name or icon. A common mistake is editing the keyboard profile while intending to change a joystick or gamepad.
- Create a custom preset. Duplicate the default preset through the profile or preset manager, then give it a descriptive name such as
Yoke - GAorGamepad - Airliner. If the simulator prompts you to create a preset when making the first edit, accept that prompt rather than trying to overwrite the default. - Choose the appropriate control section. Aircraft, camera and general interface commands may be presented in separate categories or profile scopes. Confirm that you are editing aircraft controls when assigning flight axes.
- Find and assign the command. Search by command name, select its assignment field, then press or move the desired control using the input-scanning function. Search by input, where offered, to discover what is already attached to a button or axis.
- Inspect any conflict warning. Remove an old assignment when two active flight commands would fight each other. Do not automatically clear contextual camera or interface bindings that cannot operate at the same time.
- Save and test the preset. Use the screen's save or apply action, verify that the named preset remains selected, then test it in the cockpit. Move every axis through its full travel and confirm that the on-screen control follows in the correct direction.
Should I use an axis or a button binding?
Bind controls with continuous movement to an axis command; reserve increase, decrease and toggle commands for buttons and switches.

Which controller profile should I use?
Use a copied default profile for the first setup, then create another version only when an aircraft or hardware role genuinely needs different commands.
- One joystick or gamepad: begin with one general custom flying profile.
- Yoke, throttle and pedals: maintain a separate active preset for each physical device. MSFS does not combine them into one hardware profile.
- Single-engine and multi-engine aircraft: use a combined throttle axis for one lever, or engine-specific axes when separate levers must control individual engines.
- Fixed-wing and helicopter flying: separate profiles prevent a throttle lever, collective and cyclic from inheriting unsuitable assignments.
- Aircraft-specific controls: create a variant when an airliner, helicopter or complex add-on requires commands that your normal profile does not use.
Avoid making a profile for every aircraft without a clear reason. Too many nearly identical presets make it easy to activate the wrong one, especially when each connected device has its own selection.
Why do MSFS 2024 controller bindings conflict?
Most conflicts come from duplicated axes, the wrong device profile or an analogue control bound to a digital command.
- Twitching controls: search every connected device for the affected axis. A gamepad stick and joystick can both command the same ailerons even when one appears untouched.
- Control snaps between positions: remove digital left/right or increase/decrease commands from the analogue lever or stick.
- Aircraft ignores an assignment: verify that the command applies to that aircraft and that the intended aircraft-control profile is active.
- Throttle or rudder moves by itself: check duplicate bindings and assistance options before increasing the dead zone.
- A warning appears for a reused button: inspect the contexts. Sharing one input between mutually exclusive camera and cockpit functions can be harmless; sharing it between two flight controls usually is not.
If a preset has accumulated many unexplained duplicates, it is often quicker to clear or rebuild the controller bindings cleanly than to repair every assignment individually.
Why does an axis move backwards or jump?
A reversed or jumping axis usually needs inversion, calibration or a small dead zone rather than a different command.
Use the axis reversal option if the cockpit control moves opposite to the hardware. If the response is noisy, fails to reach full travel or moves sharply around the centre, follow our steps for calibrating joystick and throttle travel. A throttle that switches only between idle and full power is usually assigned to digital throttle commands instead of a throttle axis.
Why does MSFS 2024 forget my controller mappings?
Bindings usually appear lost because the custom preset was not applied, another device is selected, or an aircraft-specific profile replaced the expected general one.
Return to Controls and inspect every connected device. Confirm that your named preset is active for each one, save after editing each device, and recheck the profile after changing aircraft. A firmware or detected-device-name change can also make MSFS treat hardware as a new peripheral while leaving the old preset attached to the previous device entry.
What controls should I map first?
Map the controls required to fly and stop the aircraft before adding lights, cameras or specialist systems.
- Pitch, roll and yaw axes
- Combined or engine-specific throttle axes
- Wheel brakes, toe brakes and parking brake
- Elevator trim up and down, or a trim axis for a physical wheel
- Flaps, landing gear and spoilers where applicable
- Cockpit view movement and view reset
- Autopilot disconnect and pause
