How do I configure controller settings in MSFS 2024?

To configure controller buttons in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, open Settings, select Controls, choose the connected device, and create a custom profile. Bind the flight axes before secondary buttons, remove conflicting assignments, adjust dead zones and sensitivity, then save the profile and test it in a simple aircraft on the ground.

How do I configure controller buttons and axes?

Start from the main menu so that live aircraft inputs do not interfere while you work. The precise labels can differ slightly by platform and simulator update, but the same process applies on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

  1. Connect and select the controller. Open Settings > Controls and choose the joystick, yoke, gamepad, throttle or pedals you want to edit. If it is missing, reconnect it and restart the simulator before creating a profile.
  2. Create a custom profile. Duplicate the default preset rather than trying to overwrite it. Give the profile a useful name based on the device or aircraft type, especially if you fly both airliners and light aircraft.
  3. Assign the primary axes. Search for the aileron, elevator, rudder and throttle axis commands, then scan or select the corresponding physical control. Centre every other lever while scanning so that a noisy axis is not captured by mistake.
  4. Check direction and travel. Move each control through its full range and watch the on-screen input indicator. Reverse the axis if left becomes right, nose-up becomes nose-down, or idle becomes full power.
  5. Add essential buttons. Assign brakes, parking brake, elevator trim, flaps, landing gear, cockpit-view reset and any camera hat switch. Add autopilot, ATC and lighting commands only after the basic flight controls work.
  6. Search for conflicts. Use the input-search function, press or move the control, and inspect every command assigned to it. Multiple keyboard and controller bindings are often harmless, but two active axes controlling the same surface can fight each other.

Which command type should I choose?

Match the simulator command to the physical input. A mistake we see constantly is assigning an analogue lever to digital increase and decrease commands, which produces an all-or-nothing response.

Use an axis command for every genuinely analogue control. For example, bind a joystick’s fore-and-aft movement to the elevator axis, not separate elevator-up and elevator-down commands. Retained switches usually need explicit on and off commands; a toggle command can leave the simulator opposite to the switch’s physical position.

Which controller buttons should I assign first?

The minimum useful profile should let you fly, trim, brake and control the view without reaching for the keyboard.

  • Pitch and roll axes
  • Rudder or steering control
  • Throttle axis or throttle increase and decrease buttons
  • Elevator trim up and down
  • Wheel brakes and parking brake
  • Flaps up and down
  • Landing gear toggle
  • Cockpit-view reset and a view hat or camera stick

A joystick or yoke benefits from axis-first configuration because incorrect pitch, roll or throttle bindings can make every aircraft seem unflyable.

How should I set sensitivity and dead zones?

Use the smallest dead zone that removes drift, then shape the response curve to suit the controller. There is no universal set of sensitivity values because stick travel, springs, worn sensors and gamepad thumbsticks behave differently.

  • Dead zone: increase it only until the centred input stops flickering or moving the aircraft.
  • Sensitivity curve: soften the response around the centre for short-travel gamepad sticks; yokes and full-size joysticks usually work better closer to linear.
  • Extremity setting: adjust this only if the physical control cannot reach the full simulated range or reaches it too early.
  • Reversed axis: use this when the whole movement is backwards; sensitivity changes will not correct direction.

Why are my MSFS 2024 controller bindings not working?

Most failed bindings come from the wrong profile, the wrong command type or another device sending the same input.

  • The assignment will not save: duplicate the default preset, edit the custom copy, and use the screen’s confirm or apply control before leaving.
  • The aircraft moves by itself: inspect every connected device for duplicate flight axes, then add a small dead zone to any drifting axis.
  • The throttle only jumps between idle and full power: it is probably assigned to digital increase/decrease commands instead of a throttle axis.
  • A switch works backwards or changes twice: replace a toggle binding with explicit on/off commands, and check that both the press and release events have not been assigned.
  • Bindings seem to have disappeared: verify the selected device, custom preset and aircraft-control category. Reconnecting hardware through a different USB port can sometimes make it appear as another device.
  • Inputs work in the controls screen but not in flight: test a default aircraft, disable piloting assistance temporarily, and confirm that the chosen command exists for that aircraft.
  • Two controls respond at once: search by input rather than command name. Platform-level remapping or an unused gamepad can produce a second input even when its stick appears centred.
