Fix a missing MSFS 2024 default controller profile by selecting the right device, clearing filters, restoring a preset or mapping unsupported hardware.
MSFS 2024 usually fails to show a default controller profile because profiles belong to the selected device, not the whole control setup. Select the controller itself in Controls and clear any search filter. If no factory preset appears, the sim probably sees the hardware as a generic device, so it needs manual bindings.
Why is the MSFS 2024 default profile missing?
A missing default profile is normally a device-selection or hardware-identification problem rather than deleted control bindings.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard, mouse or another peripheral is highlighted | The wrong device is selected | Select the controller’s own device tile before opening the profile selector. |
| The controller is listed but has no factory preset | MSFS recognises it as a generic input device | Create a custom profile and assign its axes manually. |
| A profile is selected but no commands appear | A search term, control-category filter or assigned-controls filter is active | Clear the search box, show all controls and choose the relevant aircraft category. |
| The device appears twice or under an unexpected name | Remapping software has created a virtual controller | Disable the translation layer temporarily and reconnect the physical controller. |
| A previously saved profile has vanished | The connection mode, device identity or signed-in account has changed | Reconnect it in the original way and confirm that the same device and account are selected. |
How do I restore the default controller profile?
Selecting the exact physical device and removing filters restores most apparently missing presets.
- Reconnect before launching: close Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, connect the controller directly, then restart the sim. Wired and wireless connections can sometimes present the same controller as different devices.
- Select the controller: open Controls settings and choose its device tile. Profiles are not shared automatically between the keyboard, gamepad, joystick, throttle and pedals; our explanation of how MSFS 2024 separates profiles by peripheral covers this distinction.
- Remove display filters: clear the command search, show all bindings and open the relevant aeroplane, helicopter or general-control category. Filters can make a valid preset look empty even though it remains selected.
- Check the profile selector: choose the supplied device preset if one is offered. Its name may identify the hardware rather than literally saying
Default. - Test without remapping software: on PC, platform-level controller translation and virtual-controller tools can hide the physical device from MSFS. Disable them only for diagnosis, relaunch the sim and check which device name appears.
- Create a custom profile if necessary: if the device works but no supplied preset exists, there is no default profile to restore. Map the controls and save them under a distinctive name.
There is normally no separate default-profile file that needs downloading. Reinstalling the whole simulator is also unlikely to help when the controller is being detected under the wrong identity.
Does every controller have a default MSFS 2024 profile?
No. Detecting a USB or Bluetooth controller and supplying a ready-made control preset are separate things.
Common Xbox controllers and specifically supported flight hardware normally receive standard mappings. Generic gamepads, older joysticks, home-built controls and devices connected through adapters may appear in the device list with an empty profile. See which controller types receive automatic support before treating an empty profile as a fault.
For unsupported hardware, bind the analogue controls to axis commands such as Ailerons Axis, Elevator Axis, Rudder Axis and the appropriate throttle axis. Do not bind an analogue stick to separate left, right, up or down button commands; that produces abrupt full-control deflections. Our complete joystick axis-mapping sequence covers the remaining assignments and checks.
An Xbox controller should normally have a built-in layout. If that preset is absent, first check for the wrong device tile or a virtual controller; the factory Xbox button and axis layout provides a reference for the bindings that should be present.
Why did my controller profile disappear after it worked?
A saved profile can appear missing when MSFS 2024 identifies the controller as a different device.
- Switching between USB and wireless operation can expose a different device identity.
- A mode switch on some flight controllers changes how the hardware identifies itself.
- Enabling or disabling a virtual-controller tool can replace the physical device with a software device.
- Choosing another Microsoft or Xbox account can make account-linked custom settings unavailable.
- Selecting a second, similarly named controller tile shows that device’s profiles instead.
Reconnect the original device configuration before rebuilding everything. Do not delete cloud or account data as an early troubleshooting step: that can remove custom mappings and will not create a factory preset for unsupported hardware.
Can I edit the factory controller preset?
Create or duplicate a custom profile before changing a supplied preset, especially where the factory configuration is protected from direct editing.
Give the custom profile a name that identifies both the device and its purpose, then verify that it is selected under that same peripheral and control category. A mistake we see constantly is saving joystick changes while the gamepad or another category is selected, then assuming the new profile has disappeared.
