Why won’t Meta Quest or Oculus controllers connect?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix Meta Quest or Oculus controllers that won’t connect by diagnosing battery, pairing, tracking, mobile-app, Rift and PC VR faults.

Meta Quest or Oculus controllers usually fail to connect because of a flat or poorly seated battery, lost headset pairing, stalled software, or a tracking fault mistaken for disconnection. Power-check each controller, restart the headset fully, then re-pair it in the Meta Horizon app. Older Rift controllers must instead be re-paired through the PC software.

For general Meta Quest and Oculus use, establish whether the controller is genuinely disconnected or merely untracked. If it works in the headset menus but not in a flight simulator, the controller pairing is already working and the fault lies farther along the PC VR chain.

Is the controller disconnected or just not tracking?

The controller’s symptoms usually identify which part of the connection has failed.

How do you fix Meta Quest controllers that will not connect?

  1. Check the controller’s power. Most Quest Touch controllers use replaceable AA batteries. Remove the battery, inspect the polarity and contacts, then fit a fresh, known-good battery. Touch Pro controllers have rechargeable batteries, so seat them properly on their charger and confirm that charging starts. Never wedge foil or another conductor against a loose contact.
  2. Wake both controllers. Press several face buttons and the trigger. A controller may remain asleep after the headset wakes, especially when automatic hand tracking has taken over.
  3. Restart rather than suspend the headset. Use the power menu to restart it fully. If the headset is frozen or showing a black screen, solve that first using our Quest power and boot troubleshooting steps; controllers cannot reconnect to a headset that has not completed startup.
  4. Remove grips and protective covers. An ill-fitting cover can hold down a button, stop the battery cover seating correctly or obstruct the controller’s infrared tracking emitters. Test the bare controller before changing software settings.
  5. Re-pair the affected controller. Open the Meta Horizon mobile app, select the correct headset and find the controller-pairing controls under its device settings. Unpair the faulty controller if it is listed, then choose the option to add a left or right controller.
  6. Put the controller into pairing mode. On common Quest Touch models, hold Menu and Y for the left controller or Meta/Oculus and B for the right until the status light begins pulsing. Follow the app’s displayed combination if it differs for your controller model.
  7. Allow any controller update to finish. Keep the controller close to the powered, internet-connected headset. Do not remove its battery or shut down the headset while controller firmware is being installed.

What if the Meta Horizon app cannot find the controller?

The mobile app must be signed into the account that manages the correct headset, with Bluetooth and any required nearby-device permissions enabled. Close and reopen the app, confirm that it can see the headset, and try pairing with the controller beside it.

If only one controller is missing, remove its AA battery briefly before trying again. A controller that shows no light with a fresh battery and clean, undamaged contacts is more likely to have a physical fault than an account or app problem.

Why is a connected Quest controller not moving?

A controller listed as connected but frozen in space has a tracking problem, not usually a pairing problem. Clean the headset’s outward-facing cameras with a suitable dry lens cloth, use steady indoor lighting and move away from direct sunlight, large mirrors or strong infrared sources.

  • Remove third-party controller sleeves that cover tracking emitters.
  • Check that no button or trigger is stuck beneath an accessory.
  • Temporarily disable automatic switching between controllers and hand tracking.
  • Restart the headset and recreate the boundary if tracking remains unstable throughout the room.

If tracking fails only in one part of the room, the environment is the likely cause. If one controller fails everywhere while the other remains stable, concentrate on that controller’s battery, pairing and hardware.

What about Oculus Rift and Rift S controllers?

Oculus Rift and Rift S Touch controllers are managed through the Meta Quest Link PC software rather than the Quest mobile pairing procedure. Open the headset’s device setup in the PC application and run its controller setup again.

With the original Rift, failed sensors or unstable USB connections can look like a controller fault. Rift S tracking depends on the headset cameras and its PC connection, so reconnect the headset directly to suitable PC ports and check that the cameras have a clear view. A controller shown as paired but never tracked points towards the sensors, cameras or USB connection rather than its wireless pairing.

Why do controllers work in Quest Home but not in a PC flight simulator?

If both controllers work in Quest Home, do not keep unpairing them. First confirm that the headset has entered a proper PC VR session using our USB Link and Air Link connection checks.

Bring the simulator window into focus, confirm that the intended OpenXR or SteamVR path is active, and restore the application’s default controller binding if it has been changed. Some flight simulators support Touch controllers only for pointing at cockpit controls; others still expect a mouse, yoke, throttle or gamepad for essential aircraft inputs. Our Quest 2 setup guidance for MSFS 2020 and 2024 explains that PC VR hand-off and the practical controller limitations.

Should you factory reset the headset?

A factory reset is a last resort, not a normal controller-pairing step. Use it only after fresh batteries or charging, a full restart, mobile-app re-pairing and headset updates have all failed—particularly when neither controller will connect.

A reset removes local headset data and requires applications to be downloaded again, so verify any cloud-backed data first. Follow the correct Meta Quest factory-reset procedure and its precautions. If one controller remains completely unresponsive while the other pairs normally, repair or replacement of that controller is more appropriate than resetting the whole headset.
