Fix a flight simulator not recognising your joystick by checking USB detection, controller profiles, axis bindings, conflicts and calibration.
In general PC flight simulators, a joystick usually goes unrecognised because the operating system cannot see it, the simulator has selected an empty controller profile, or its axes are unassigned. Connect it directly, test it outside the simulator, then bind pitch, roll, yaw and throttle as analogue axes.
Where is the joystick connection failing?
The quickest fix is to identify whether the failure is in the hardware, operating system or simulator configuration.

How do I make my flight simulator detect the joystick?
- Reconnect the hardware. Close the simulator, unplug the joystick and connect it directly to another USB port. Avoid an unpowered hub, check any detachable cable and connect the unit's external power supply if it requires one.
- Check the controller mode. Some devices have PC, console, XInput or DirectInput modes. Select the mode intended for your platform before launching the simulator.
- Test it in the operating system. In Windows, press
Win+R, enterjoy.cpland open the controller's Properties panel. Move every axis and press each button. Open the simulator's controls or input settings, choose the joystick rather than the keyboard or gamepad, and create or activate a profile. An automatically created profile may be empty even though the device name appears.
- Bind analogue axes. Assign stick left and right to the aileron or roll axis, forward and back to the elevator or pitch axis, twist to the rudder or yaw axis, and the throttle lever to the throttle axis. Exact labels vary between simulators. Do not assign stick movement to digital commands such as
Aileron LeftorElevator Up. - Remove duplicate assignments. Check the gamepad, keyboard, throttle and other connected controllers for axes bound to the same flight control. Two devices continually sending different values can make the aircraft twitch, centre itself or ignore the joystick.
- Calibrate and tune the axes. Confirm the full input range, centre position and direction. Add only enough dead zone to stop genuine centre jitter; excessive dead zone makes the controls feel unresponsive. - Test a simple default aircraft. Load a basic aircraft with the autopilot off and any physical control lock removed. If that works, the original aircraft probably uses a separate profile, custom control system or add-on configuration.
Why is the joystick listed but not controlling the aircraft?
A listed joystick has passed basic detection, so the problem is usually its assignments. A mistake we see constantly is binding the stick to directional button commands instead of the continuous axis commands.
Watch the input indicator in the controls screen while moving the stick. If the indicator moves but the cockpit controls do not, check for duplicate bindings, an engaged autopilot, active assistance features or an aircraft-specific profile. If there is no input indicator at all, return to calibration and profile selection.

Why did the simulator stop recognising a joystick that worked before?
A previously working joystick often stops after a USB-port change, controller-profile reset, driver change or the installation of remapping software. The simulator may treat the device as a new controller and assign a blank default profile.
Reconnect it to its original port, confirm that the old profile is selected and temporarily close any software that creates a virtual controller. Do not delete a working custom profile until you have checked whether the simulator has simply switched to another one.
Can any USB joystick work on a console flight simulator?

When is the joystick itself probably faulty?
Suspect a hardware fault when the joystick receives no power, repeatedly disconnects, is absent from the operating system on more than one computer, or shows no axis movement in its test panel. If it works correctly outside the simulator, replacing the joystick is unlikely to solve the problem; concentrate on profiles, assignments and conflicts instead.
