Oculus or Meta Quest headset won't turn on? Diagnose charging, black screens, boot loops, Quest Pro docks, and Rift USB or video faults.
A battery-powered Oculus or Meta Quest that will not turn on should be connected directly to a known-good wall charger for 30 minutes, then force-restarted by holding Power for 30 seconds. Oculus Rift and Rift S do not charge; reseat their USB and video connections, then check the PC runtime.
These are general VR hardware checks for Oculus Quest, Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro in flight-simulation setups; they are not tied to one simulator. Rift and Rift S are PC-powered headsets, so applying Quest battery instructions to them is a common mistake.
Why won't my VR headset turn on?
The correct fix depends on whether the headset contains its own battery, depends on a PC for power, or is already running behind a black display.

For another brand of VR headset, use the same distinction. Battery-powered models need charging checks, while tethered models depend on the host device, video connection and any separate power supply or link box. Do not use Quest button combinations or factory-reset options on a different headset.
What should I do if my Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 or Quest Pro is not turning on?
A Quest showing no signs of life should be tested with the simplest possible charging path before resets or PC troubleshooting.
- Remove every accessory. Disconnect the Link cable, external battery strap, magnetic adaptor, headphones and USB hub. Connect power directly to the headset rather than through an accessory or charging dock.
- Inspect the USB-C port and casing. Look for compacted debris, bent contacts, looseness, liquid, discolouration, unusual heat or a lifting case. Do not insert a metal tool or add cleaning fluid. Stop if the port looks burnt or the battery appears swollen.
- Let the headset reach room temperature. Charging can pause when the battery is unusually hot or cold. Do not try to accelerate this with direct heat.
- Use a known-good cable and wall adaptor. Use the supplied equipment if available, or a combination known to charge another suitable device. Try another mains socket. A sleeping PC, low-output USB port or faulty extension can leave the headset too empty to boot.
- Leave it charging undisturbed. Wait at least 30 minutes before trying Power. A headset stored with an empty battery may need several hours. Repeated boot attempts consume the small charge it is receiving.
- Force a restart. Hold Power continuously for about 30 seconds, release it, wait briefly and then press Power normally. Try once with only the direct charger attached and once after disconnecting it.
- Open the boot menu. Hold Power and Volume Down together until the menu appears. Use the volume buttons to highlight the normal startup option, usually labelled
Boot Device, and press Power to select it. Do not choose a factory reset by mistake.

Why is my Quest Pro not turning on from its charging dock?
A Quest Pro that will not wake from its dock should be connected directly through the headset's USB-C port.
Check that covers or accessories are not preventing the headset from sitting correctly, and wipe the dock contacts with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Controller charging indicators do not prove that the headset itself is charging. If direct USB-C charging works, the likely fault is dock alignment, its power path or the dock hardware rather than a dead headset.
Is my Oculus on but showing a black screen?
Startup audio, a status light or a visible boot logo means the headset is receiving power even when the lenses remain black.
- Remove any lens protector and make sure an aftermarket facial interface is not obstructing the headset's wear or proximity sensor.
- Clean the sensor area gently with a dry microfibre cloth, put the headset on and press Power briefly to wake it.
- Force-restart the headset rather than repeatedly tapping Power.
- Disconnect Link, battery straps and USB accessories, then test whether the standalone Quest Home environment appears.
A Meta logo confirms that the display and basic power system can operate during startup, although it does not prove that the battery is healthy. If the display goes black only after starting Link, Air Link or a simulator, it is not a headset power failure.
Why does the Meta logo appear and then restart?
A repeating Meta logo is a boot loop: power reaches the Quest, but its operating system is not completing startup.
Keep the headset on reliable direct power, remove all accessories and allow several minutes for startup, especially if it may have lost power during an update. Repeatedly interrupting the logo can prolong the recovery. Try Boot Device from the Power and Volume Down menu if a normal restart still loops.
A factory reset is a last resort when the headset charges, opens the boot menu reliably and cannot complete a normal boot. It removes local applications, settings and data that have not been backed up. It cannot repair a failed battery, damaged USB-C port or defective display.
Why won't my Oculus Rift turn on?
Oculus Rift and Rift S have no rechargeable headset battery or normal standalone boot process; they wake through their PC connections and Oculus runtime.
- Shut down the PC. Remove USB hubs, extension leads and unnecessary adaptors while diagnosing the fault.
- Reseat both ends of the headset cable. Check the connection at the headset where it is removable, then inspect the cable for sharp bends, crushed sections or damaged plugs.
- Use the correct video output. The original Rift uses HDMI, while Rift S uses DisplayPort. Connect it to the compatible graphics card rather than a motherboard video socket on a PC with dedicated graphics.
- Connect USB directly to the PC. Prefer a rear motherboard USB port over a passive hub or front-panel extension. Try another compatible port if Windows does not detect the headset.
- Start the PC software and inspect device status. A USB error points towards power, the cable or the USB controller; a video error points towards the graphics output, cable or GPU path.
- Repair the software side only after the cabling checks. If the desktop application will not start or its background service fails, use our steps to repair the Oculus runtime and its Windows service.
On a laptop, the physical video socket must be wired to a compatible GPU. A plug adaptor cannot create a missing graphics path. If the PC repeatedly loses both USB and video detection after reseating the cable, the tether or headset hardware may require service.
Why does the headset turn on but not work in my flight simulator?
If Quest Home loads normally, the headset has turned on and the remaining fault lies between PC VR, OpenXR and the simulator.
A mistake we see constantly is resetting a healthy Quest because Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane or Prepar3D remains on the monitor. For Quest, follow the correct USB Link or Air Link connection sequence; a cable that provides charging may still lack a working data connection.
Once Windows and the PC software recognise the headset, check the active OpenXR runtime and launch order using our flight-simulator VR setup guidance. Simulator detection, a flat-screen launch or a black view after entering VR should not be diagnosed as a dead battery.
When does a VR headset need professional repair?
Repair is the sensible next step when two known-good charging combinations produce no light, sound or boot-menu response after several hours, or when a tethered Rift remains undetected on known-working PC ports.
- The USB-C port becomes unusually hot, smells burnt, looks discoloured or no longer holds the plug securely.
- The casing is lifting or distorted, which may indicate a swollen battery.
- The power button is stuck, loose or has lost its normal movement.
- The Quest runs only while connected to power and shuts down immediately when unplugged.
- The headset has suffered liquid, impact or cable damage.
- Audio and startup sounds work after a forced restart, but the display never produces an image.
Stop charging a swollen, excessively hot or burnt-smelling headset. Do not open or puncture its lithium battery enclosure; use the manufacturer's authorised service route or a qualified repairer, particularly while warranty cover remains available.
