Meta Quest headset won't turn on? Diagnose charging, cable, battery, black-screen and boot-loop faults, then learn when reset or repair is needed.
If an Oculus or Meta Quest headset will not turn on, charge it from a known-good wall adaptor for at least 30 minutes, then hold Power for 30 seconds. If the display remains dark, check for charging lights, try another cable and adaptor, and distinguish a dead headset from a powered-on black screen.
These checks apply to battery-powered Oculus Quest and Meta Quest headsets used in general flight-simulation setups. Oculus Rift and Rift S are powered through their PC connections and do not have the same standalone charging or boot process.
Is the Quest off, or is only the display black?
A Quest that makes startup sounds, shows a status light, responds in its mobile app or wakes its controllers is probably powered on even if the lenses remain black.
- Remove any lens cover and check that an aftermarket facial interface is not obstructing the headset's proximity sensor.
- Clean the sensor and lenses gently with a dry microfibre cloth, then put the headset on and press Power briefly.
- Listen for startup audio and look for the Meta logo. A visible logo confirms that the display and basic power system work.
- Disconnect the Link cable and test the standalone Quest home environment. A black display that appears only after entering PC VR is not a battery fault.

How do I revive a Quest that shows no power?
A completely unresponsive Quest should be tested with a simple charging path before attempting resets or software troubleshooting.
- Disconnect every accessory. Remove the Link cable, external battery strap, headphones and USB adaptors. Connect the charger directly to the headset.
- Inspect the USB-C port. Look for compacted lint, bent parts, looseness, liquid, discolouration or heat damage. Do not scrape the contacts with a metal object.
- Use a known-good wall adaptor and cable. Try another mains socket as well. A PC USB port may provide insufficient power, particularly while the computer is asleep.
- Leave it charging undisturbed. Wait at least 30 minutes before testing it. A battery left empty for a long period may need several hours before the headset shows a charging light or accepts a start command.
- Force a restart. While the headset is disconnected from accessories, hold Power for about 30 seconds. Release it, wait several seconds and press Power normally.
- Try the boot menu. Hold Power and Volume Down until a boot menu appears. Use the volume controls to choose the normal boot option, often labelled
Boot Device, and confirm with Power. Do not select a factory reset by mistake.
Charging-light colours and behaviour differ between Quest generations and battery states. The useful clue is whether any light appears consistently with one charger but not another, rather than the colour alone.
What does the headset's behaviour mean?
The point at which startup fails usually identifies whether the problem is charging, battery hardware, the display or system software.

Why does the Meta logo appear and then restart?
A repeating Meta logo means power is reaching the headset, but its operating system is not completing startup.
Leave the headset connected to reliable power for a while, especially if it may have shut down during an update. Remove accessories, restart through the boot menu and allow several minutes for the first boot; repeatedly interrupting it can prolong the problem.
A factory reset is a last resort for a persistent software boot loop. It erases local data and installed content, and it will not repair a failed battery, damaged charging port or defective display. Use it only after confirming that the headset charges, opens the boot menu and cannot complete a normal boot.
When does a Quest need professional repair?
Repair is the sensible next step when two known-good charging combinations produce no light or boot-menu response after several hours.
- The USB-C port becomes unusually hot, smells burnt, looks discoloured or no longer grips the plug.
- The case is lifting or distorted, which can indicate a swollen battery.
- The power button is stuck, loose or does not click normally.
- The headset turns off immediately when external power is removed.
- There are signs of liquid or impact damage.
Stop charging a headset that is swollen, excessively hot or smells unusual, and do not open its lithium battery enclosure. Use the manufacturer's authorised service route, particularly while the device remains under warranty.
Once the standalone headset boots normally, follow the appropriate Quest-to-PC connection procedure for USB Link or Air Link before starting a flight simulator.
