Find why a Meta Quest or Oculus keeps shutting down and fix battery, proximity sensor, overheating, software and Quest Link power faults.
A Meta Quest or Oculus headset usually keeps shutting down because its battery is depleted or failing, the proximity sensor is triggering sleep, it is overheating, or the software is crashing. Charge it from a wall socket, clear the sensor and vents, force-restart it, update it, then test without accessories before considering a factory reset.
For general Meta Quest and Oculus troubleshooting, first establish whether the headset is powering off, rebooting, sleeping or merely losing its display. Those symptoms look similar inside VR but have different fixes. Battery checks apply to standalone headsets; tethered Oculus Rift and Rift S headsets receive their power from the PC.
Is the headset actually shutting down?
A true shutdown requires a complete start-up afterwards, while sleep or a lost PC connection can normally be resumed without rebooting the headset.

How do I stop Meta Quest from randomly turning off?
The reliable fix is to test power, the proximity sensor, temperature and software in that order, changing only one variable at a time.
- Charge it while powered off. Disconnect Quest Link, battery straps and power banks, then use a known-good cable and wall charger supplying adequate power. Leave it charging for at least a couple of hours. A charging symbol alone does not prove that the battery is gaining charge during use; follow our Quest charging fault checklist if the percentage stalls, falls or jumps unexpectedly.
- Remove accessories. Test with the original facial interface and strap, without a case, battery strap, USB adaptor or extension lead. Check that nothing presses the Power button. A tight case or misaligned strap can hold the button long enough to invoke the power menu or force a restart.
- Clean the proximity sensor. The small sensor near the lenses detects whether the headset is being worn. Hair, dirt and third-party facial interfaces can make it trigger sleep repeatedly. Wipe it gently with a dry microfibre cloth and test the headset on your face; do not permanently cover or disable the sensor as a fix.
- Let the headset cool. Power it off, unplug charging accessories and leave it at room temperature until the shell is no longer unusually warm. Clear the external vents and remove any cover that obstructs airflow. Never cool it in a refrigerator or leave its lenses facing direct sunlight.
- Force-restart it. Hold the Power button until the boot logo appears; this can take longer than a normal button press. A forced restart clears a stalled power state without deleting installed apps or account data.
- Update and isolate the software. Install available headset updates and, for PC VR, update the Meta PC software. Test in the standalone Home environment before opening one app at a time. If only one game causes the reboot, reinstall that app before resetting the entire headset.
- Review sleep behaviour. Check the headset's power settings and lengthen the automatic sleep interval for testing. Meta has moved or renamed some settings between software releases, so look for options referring to automatic sleep or waking rather than relying on an old menu path.
- Watch the battery percentage. Start from a full charge and note the indicated level immediately before each shutdown. A rapid fall, a jump from a healthy percentage to empty, or operation only while connected to a charger points to a degraded battery or internal power fault rather than a settings problem.
Why does Quest shut down during Link or a flight simulator?
A Quest can shut down during Quest Link because a USB connection may carry data successfully without supplying enough power to maintain the battery during a demanding PC VR session.
A mistake we see constantly is assuming that the Link connection symbol means the headset is charging fast enough. If the percentage falls throughout a long flight, begin with a full battery and test a direct, high-power USB-C port instead of a hub, front-panel extension or unpowered adaptor. Oculus Rift and Rift S do not contain a headset battery. Apparent shutdowns on those models should be treated as USB, display-cable, graphics-driver or PC power faults rather than charging problems.
When should I factory reset or seek repair?
Use a factory reset only when shutdowns continue across several apps after charging, cooling, updating and testing the headset without accessories.
A reset erases installed apps and local data, but it cannot repair a worn battery, damaged charging port or faulty Power button. Confirm that important supported data has synchronised and that you know the account credentials before following our factory-reset procedure.
Stop using the headset and arrange qualified service if the case is separating or swollen, the USB-C port is loose or scorched, there is an unusual smell, or the unit becomes excessively hot. Hardware attention is also justified when a stock, fully updated headset repeatedly powers off well above empty after a reset, especially if the battery percentage changes abruptly.
