Fix a Meta Quest or Oculus screen that keeps going black by checking power, the face sensor, forced restart, PC VR software and hardware faults.
A Meta Quest or Oculus screen usually keeps going black because the headset is asleep, its face sensor is obstructed, the battery is too low, the operating system has frozen, or a PC VR connection has failed. Charge it, force-restart it, clear the sensor, then test standalone mode before changing Link or graphics settings.
What usually causes a Meta Quest black screen?
The point at which the display fails usually identifies the cause. This is general Meta Quest and Oculus troubleshooting rather than a fault specific to one flight simulator.
| What happens | Likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| No logo, sound, status light or controller response | Flat battery, charging fault or no power | Charge from a wall adapter and test another cable |
| Meta logo appears, then the display stays black | Frozen startup, incomplete update or system fault | Force-restart the headset |
| The screen switches off when the headset moves | Blocked face sensor, poor fit or automatic sleep | Remove accessories and clean the sensor |
| Standalone menus work but Link is black | USB, wireless, runtime, OpenXR or graphics problem | Test the PC VR connection separately |
| Only one game or simulator is black | Application or VR-session failure | Quit that application and launch another |
| One eye is black or the image contains lines and flashes | Display, connector or cable hardware fault | Restart, then inspect for a repeatable hardware symptom |
How do I fix a Meta Quest or Oculus black screen?
Work through these checks in order, because changing PC settings cannot fix a discharged or sleeping headset.
- Confirm that the headset has power. Connect it to a known-good wall adapter and USB-C cable for at least 30 minutes. A cable that charges another device is useful evidence, although it does not prove the adapter supplies enough power. If there is still no logo, sound or status light, follow our power and startup checks for an unresponsive Quest.
- Force a restart. Hold the power button for roughly 30 seconds, even if the display remains black, and release it when the startup logo appears. This does not erase installed applications or account data.
- Try the boot menu if a normal restart fails. With the headset switched off, hold Power and Volume Down until the boot menu appears. Highlight
Boot Devicewith the volume buttons and select it with Power. Do not choose the factory-reset option during this test. - Clear the face-detection sensor. Remove any silicone cover, lens insert, spacer or third-party facial interface that may overlap the small sensor near the lenses. Wipe the sensor with a dry microfibre cloth; do not use liquid lens cleaner. Briefly test the headset with the suspect accessory removed.
- Check fit and sleep behaviour. Tightening the headset excessively can shift the facial interface into the sensor, while a very loose fit can make the headset think it has been removed. If the display goes black after a repeatable period, temporarily increase the automatic sleep timeout in the power settings.
- Test the Quest without a PC. Restart into the normal standalone Home environment and open a built-in menu or another application. If those display correctly, the panels and basic headset software are working; move on to Link troubleshooting rather than resetting the entire headset.
- Install available headset and application updates. Connect the Quest to Wi-Fi, check its software-update settings and restart after any update. If only one application fails, quit it completely before reinstalling it; check whether its local saves are backed up first.
Why does the screen go black only with Quest Link or Air Link?
A black display confined to Quest Link, Air Link or Virtual Desktop is normally a PC VR session problem, not a dead Quest screen.
For wired Link, use a data-capable cable connected directly to a high-speed USB port on the PC. Avoid unpowered hubs, case-front ports and unnecessary adapters while testing. A charging-only USB-C cable can power the headset yet carry no Link data; our Quest-to-PC connection guide explains how to isolate cable, USB and wireless faults.
Restart both the headset and PC, reopen the Meta Quest Link desktop application, and reconnect the session. Update the supported graphics driver, close recording or performance overlays, and make sure the application is using the OpenXR runtime expected by its launcher. Switching runtimes blindly can fix one title while breaking another, so change this only when standalone Quest works and a particular PC application does not.
For Air Link, test with the PC connected to the router by Ethernet and the headset on the same local network. Disable VPN software temporarily and remove duplicate saved PC pairings before pairing again. If wired Link works but Air Link does not, concentrate on the network rather than reinstalling the headset.
What if only Microsoft Flight Simulator goes black in VR?
If the Quest Home environment and other PC VR applications display normally, repair the simulator's VR session rather than the headset. Failed OpenXR initialisation, switching into VR before the runtime is ready, or a stalled simulator window can all produce a headset image with no cockpit; use our Microsoft Flight Simulator VR black-screen checks for that specific case.
What about Oculus Rift and Rift S?
Oculus Rift and Rift S cannot perform a standalone test, so their black-screen diagnosis starts at the PC. Reseat the headset cable at both ends, connect USB and video directly to the computer, and ensure the video connector uses the dedicated graphics card rather than a motherboard output.
Rift S uses DisplayPort, while the original Rift uses HDMI. Avoid converters during diagnosis, restart the Meta/Oculus runtime and test another suitable port. A display that cuts out when the tether moves strongly suggests a worn cable or connector rather than an OpenXR setting.
When should I factory reset the headset?
Factory reset is appropriate only when standalone Quest remains black after charging, forced restart, accessory removal and boot-menu testing, but the headset can still enter recovery or respond normally.
A reset erases local applications, settings and data that have not been backed up; purchases remain associated with the account. Read the reset methods and data-loss precautions before proceeding. Do not reset merely because one PC game or Link session is black.
Suspect hardware if the boot menu is also invisible, one display remains black, the picture returns only when a cable is bent, or the fault began after impact, liquid exposure or visible connector damage. If a factory reset completes and the standalone display is still black, software and simulator settings are no longer credible causes; the headset, display assembly or tether requires professional service.
