Fix an Oculus or Meta Quest headset not charging: test the cable, adaptor, USB port, temperature and battery, and know when repair is needed.
An Oculus or Meta Quest headset usually stops charging because the USB-C cable or power adaptor is unsuitable, the connector is loose or dirty, the battery is too hot or cold, or the headset has frozen. Power it off, let it reach room temperature, then test it with a known-good wall charger and cable.
This is normally a headset power issue rather than a flight-simulator setting. The same checks apply across Oculus and Meta Quest models, although chargers, docks and battery straps are not necessarily interchangeable between them.
How do I get a Meta Quest charging again?
Start with a complete shutdown and a direct wall connection, removing the PC and every accessory from the charging path.
- Shut the headset down fully. Do not leave it merely asleep. Disconnect it and allow it to reach room temperature, particularly after a long VR session or exposure to a cold room or vehicle.
- Use a wall socket. Connect the original adaptor and cable where available, without an extension lead, dock or USB hub. If the battery is deeply discharged, leave the headset switched off and connected for 30–60 minutes; an indicator or boot screen may not appear immediately.
- Swap the cable and adaptor separately. Test with a reputable, compatible USB power adaptor and a known-good USB-C cable. A cable can still transfer data yet fail under charging load, so a successful Link connection does not prove that the cable is healthy.
- Inspect the USB-C port. Look for compacted lint, a bent centre tongue, discolouration or a plug that will not seat fully. Remove loose debris only with the headset unplugged and a dry, non-metallic soft brush. Do not scrape the contacts or insert liquid.
- Bypass accessories. Remove any battery strap, charging dock, magnetic adaptor or extension and connect the charger directly to the headset. If direct charging works, reconnect accessories individually to find the failed part.
- Force a restart after charging. Hold the power button until the headset begins a restart or shows its boot logo; this can take longer than an ordinary press. We would not factory-reset a headset at this stage, because a reset erases local data and rarely repairs a dead charging path.

Why does my Quest charge from the wall but not my PC?
A PC USB port can maintain a data connection without supplying enough power to charge a Quest reliably. The headset may charge slowly, remain at the same percentage or continue discharging while Link is active.
Connect directly to the computer rather than through a keyboard, monitor, front-panel extension or unpowered hub. Remember that a USB data-speed label does not guarantee high charging output. If wall charging works but the headset fails only when entering Microsoft Flight Simulator VR, treat that as a PC VR connection problem rather than a bad battery. Follow the MSFS VR troubleshooting sequence before changing simulator settings or replacing the headset.
Why does the battery drain while the headset is plugged in?
The battery percentage falls during use when the headset draws more power than the cable, adaptor or PC port can provide. Rendering a demanding flight simulator, running at high brightness and powering active accessories can all increase consumption.
To distinguish normal active drain from a charging fault, note the percentage, shut the headset down and connect it directly to a suitable wall adaptor for 30 minutes. If the percentage rises while switched off, the battery and charging circuit are working; the original source simply could not keep pace. If it remains unchanged, repeat the cable and adaptor tests.
When does a Quest charging problem need repair?
Seek service when the headset remains unresponsive after charging at room temperature from a confirmed working wall adaptor and cable, with all accessories removed.
- The connector is loose, recessed or works only when pressure is applied.
- Several compatible cables and adaptors fail in the same way.
- The port or plug becomes unusually hot, smells burnt or shows discolouration.
- The casing is swollen, separating or distorted.
- The headset was exposed to liquid or suffered an impact near the charging port.
Stop charging or wearing the headset if there is swelling, burning smell, liquid exposure or excessive localised heat. Its internal battery is not a routine user-serviceable part.
