Add a bold new look to your North American warbird by installing this vivid repaint, crafted by Chris Brisland, for the default racing variant included with Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This custom “Wild Horses” texture introduces intricate effects across the fuselage and wings, enhancing the legendary lines of the P-51 Mustang while maintaining historically inspired repair details. The visual result is designed to stand out during competitive pylon racing or leisurely cross-country adventures.
Unique Texture Characteristics
Wild Horses showcases stylized markings and layered surface accents that reflect an imaginative take on the iconic P-51 racer. These texture files only modify specific exterior sections, leaving the default gauges, cockpit layout, and flight model intact. Chris Brisland created this livery purely as a fictional project to experiment with advanced shading and metallic highlights, adding a compelling depth to the aircraft’s outline without altering underlying performance values.
Insights on the P-51 Mustang Racer
Originally developed by North American Aviation during World War II, the P-51 Mustang quickly became one of the most formidable single-engine fighters of its time. Modern racing adaptations often reduce overall wingspan and optimize the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine for extreme performance, leading to impressive power outputs. This repaint aligns with the spirit of Reno air racing, where pilots push every horsepower to the limit while maneuvering close to the pylons.
Installation Guidance
This repaint is designed for the existing P-51 Racer model that ships with Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Note that this download only contains the updated textures; the base model is not included. If you do not already have the default P-51 Racer installed in your simulator, you can obtain it from the standard FSX installation or through the Fly Away Simulation library if needed.
- Navigate to your aircraft folder, typically at:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\P51_Racer - Extract the included texture files directly into the same folder, ensuring that the “Use Folder Names” option is enabled if prompted by your extraction tool. A new folder for the Wild Horses textures will be created automatically.
- Locate your aircraft.cfg file in the same folder, then open it with a text editor such as Notepad.
- In the aircraft.cfg, find the last block that starts with [fltsim.x]. Copy the entry shown below and paste it immediately after that final block.
- Adjust the x in [fltsim.x] to the next sequential number, then save your changes.
Configuration Data
Insert this text at the bottom of the aircraft.cfg file while replacing x with the correct index number:
[fltsim.x] title=P51 Racer "Wild Horses" sim=P51_Racer model= panel= sound= texture=mustang kb_checklists=NA_P51_check kb_reference=NA_P51_ref atc_id_color=0xffff0000 atc_id=G-HORS ui_manufacturer="North American" ui_type="P-51D" ui_variation="Wild Horses Livery" ui_typerole="Single Engine Prop" ui_createdby="Microsoft Corporation" description="This race-modified North American P-51D wrings extra performance out of one of the best-performing fighters of World War II. The racer's reduced wingspan provides better low-level maneuverability and reduced drag. But this race aircraft attacks the pylons at Reno not with guns, but with more than 3,000 horsepower. Its Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 is tricked out to produce twice the power of the factory Merlin engine."
Flight Experience
Once installed, you will find the Wild Horses repaint listed among the aircraft variations within Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Select it, take to the skies, and immerse yourself in the fascinating merge of classic design and fictional flair. Whether practicing tight turns at low altitude or cruising above scenic terrain, this dedicated scheme offers an engaging way to rediscover the agility and power of the Mustang lineage. All credit for this texture set goes to Chris Brisland, preserving the WW II spirit while presenting an imaginative modern-day twist.
