Tuskegee North American P-51 Mustang
A P51D Mustang entitled "Red Tail Devil". This is a historically accurate rep…
Tuskegee-liveried North American P-51 Mustang brings WWII warbird performance to Microsoft Flight Simulator X with a complete freeware package including aircraft model, custom textures, sound, panel, and a faithful virtual cockpit. The finish pays tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen while capturing the Mustang’s sleek lines and long-range fighter character.
This fully freeware release introduces the North American P-51 Mustang into Microsoft Flight Simulator X, featuring a rendition of the Tuskegee fighter once associated with Don Hinz. It includes a complete package, offering the aircraft model, texture set, and installation instructions. The real-world P-51 involved in this depiction had an unfortunate incident in 2004 when its engine failed during a low pass at an airshow. The pilot, Don Hinz, did not survive the crash despite being transported to the hospital. Today, the Minnesota Wing of the Commemorative Air Force continues to restore the original airframe. The creators responsible for this package include the original work by Robert Dial and subsequent textures and updates by Mark Rooks of RSDG Aircraft.
The North American P-51 is renowned for its service in World War II. Often recognized for its use by various Air Force units, it combined a unique laminar-flow wing with a powerful engine, which granted it exceptional speed and range for long-endurance missions. The “Tuskegee” paint scheme showcased here pays homage to the historic Tuskegee Airmen, illustrating how these aviators supported bombing missions deep into enemy territory. This freeware release accurately captures the P-51’s exterior lines and cockpit layout, reflecting its status as a fast and agile WWII-era fighter.

To incorporate this Mustang into your simulator, unzip all provided files to a temporary directory. Then, locate the new “Tuskegee P-51” folder (containing six core elements: CFG, Airfile, Model, Sound, Panel, and Textures) and copy it into your main aircraft directory. By default, in Microsoft Flight Simulator X, this directory can often be found at:
Be sure to place the file labeled “Gauges” into your simulator’s “Gauges” folder to enable proper instrument functionality in the cockpit. Confirm you have unzipped all files fully, and ensure each subfolder is intact in the aircraft’s configuration.
With textures by Mark Rooks, this edition reflects historical markings of the Tuskegee P-51, honoring its mid-century heritage. The real-world project to restore this aircraft is ongoing under the supervision of the Minnesota Wing of the CAF, who are committed to preserving its legacy. Included in this download are reference photographs that provide insight into the actual airframe’s appearance.
Credit for the base aircraft originates with Robert Dial, while Mark Rooks of RSDG Aircraft undertook the texture enhancements and compatibility updates. The package incorporates narrative text from Col. Robert K Suchke reflecting on airborne forces, rangers, and special forces. These references underscore an appreciation for military lineage, reminiscent of the P-51’s own historical significance. Below is a paraphrased passage that honors that tradition:
Excerpt Adaptation:
“When order needed to be restored, formidable individuals emerged—some from the air, others from the sea, and still more from the land. Each wore distinctive insignia, acting together to maintain peace. Their determination exemplified the special forces spirit.”
For any user seeking a vintage warbird experience within Microsoft Flight Simulator X, this P-51 Mustang freeware add-on delivers both a visual and historical tribute, while also offering a fully operational flying model. Enjoy your new aircraft and thanks to the efforts of all contributors—particularly Robert Dial, Mark “Fire Ball” Rooks, and Col. Robert K Suchke—whose dedication keeps this aviation icon alive in virtual skies.
