A newly established company, Redbird Media, is set to advance the role of flight simulation in flight training. The company plans to revolutionize how flight instructors and pilots think about simulation.
Although flight simulation is considered essential in making flight training more affordable, in the real world, simulation is not fully integrated into flight training. Jeff Van West, Director of Redbird Media, said, "The core issue is that most pilots and instructors see simulation as an adjunct to flight training and proficiency. We need to shift people's concept of simulation such that it becomes a central part of a pilot lifestyle. To reap the benefits, using simulation must become a habit."
Redbird Media is a sister company of Redbird Flight Simulations, a Texas-based company committed to transforming aviation through designing and developing groundbreaking and affordable flight training technologies. Redbird Media, Redbird Flight Simulations and other companies will work together to make simulation an essential aspect of flight training for flight schools and pilots.
Redbird Media will offer a wide range of special programs for pilots, including virtual fly-ins, spot-landing contests, and ongoing monthly training programs designed to meet the needs of individual pilots. Jeff Van West added, "Get pilots in the habit of coming to the airport for an exciting monthly sim session and they're more likely to stay in the habit of real-world flying because they're more comfortable, more proficient and simply at the airport more often.”
In this program, Redbird Media will also collaborate with Redbird Skyport, a versatile general aviation services center that primarily functions as a research and development laboratory. Redbird Media and Skyport will work on instructor training for simulation use, and this will include comprehensive pilot ratings and skill-testing sessions. Roger Sharp, Chief Pilot Skyport, comments, "Instructor competence on simulator-based training is critical. Unless they are 100 percent bought in, it falls apart."
Van West added, "We're making teaching guides containing all the details an instructor needs for a complete training experience. But there will be room in all curricula to apply their skills as educators more and more as they gain experience with this way of thinking. It's not only about better instruction; simulation done well is also cheaper for the student while simultaneously more profitable for the school."
The Director of Redbird Media will be giving a speech on this subject on October 22-24, 2012, at Redbird's Migration Flight Training Conference, San Marcos, Texas. Van West brings extensive expertise and experience in simulation and flights – he was the editor of IFR magazine, which is popular for its valuable information about flights. Van West was also the director of The Aviation Consumer, a consumer report for pilots. He also co-authored the top-selling book, Flight Simulator X for Real-World Pilots.
