Learn how to sign in to Steam with a QR code, approve the correct device, and fix expired, missing or unresponsive codes.
To sign in to Steam with a QR code, open the Steam login screen on your computer, then open the Steam Mobile app on a phone where you are already signed in. Select Steam Guard, scan the displayed code with the app's scanner, check the device and location, and approve the request.
How to scan the Steam login QR code
The QR code must be scanned through the Steam Mobile app, not an ordinary phone camera or third-party QR reader.
- Open the Steam login screen in the desktop client or a supported web browser. A QR code should appear beside the usual account-name and password fields.
- Check the mobile account by opening the Steam Mobile app and confirming that it is signed in to the Steam account you want on the computer. This prevents a common mistake when several accounts are saved on one phone.
- Open the QR scanner from the Steam Guard area, usually identified by a shield icon. Allow camera access if your phone requests it.
- Scan the code by fitting the entire square inside the camera frame. The computer screen and phone both need an internet connection.
- Review the request, including the account, device or browser and approximate location shown by Steam. Approve it only when those details match the computer in front of you.
- Wait for the login to complete on the computer. You should not need to type your Steam password after approving a valid QR request.
What do you need for Steam QR login?

The QR code is deliberately short-lived. A code left open for too long may expire, and refreshing the login page invalidates the previous one.
Why is the Steam QR code not working?
Most Steam QR login failures come from an expired code, the wrong mobile account, blocked camera access or a delayed Steam authentication request.
- Expired or rejected code: Refresh the computer's login screen and scan the new code. Do not keep trying a screenshot or an older code.
- Camera will not recognise it: Use the scanner inside the Steam app, enable camera permission, clean the camera lens and reduce screen glare. Keep the whole QR code visible rather than holding the phone too close.
- No approval appears: Confirm that the phone is online and that the intended account is active in the app. Reopen the Steam Guard area and scan the latest code again.
- QR code is missing: Restart or update the Steam client, or reload the genuine Steam login page. Some older or embedded login windows may offer only account-name and password authentication.
- Approval succeeds but the computer remains signed out: Reload the login window and generate a new code. If passwords and confirmations are also failing, check whether Steam authentication is unavailable before changing local settings.
Is signing in to Steam with a QR code safe?
Steam QR sign-in is safe when you scan a code displayed on a device you control and carefully verify the approval request. It avoids typing your password into the computer, but approving the wrong request can still give another device access to your account.
Never scan a Steam login QR code sent through a message, email, chat or support conversation. Deny any request showing an unfamiliar device; an approximate location may be affected by mobile networks or a VPN, but a completely unexpected device or browser is a clear warning. Steam support should never need you to approve a login on somebody else's machine.
Can you use QR sign-in if you have forgotten your password?
QR sign-in can work without entering a password if the Steam Mobile app still has a valid session for that account. It cannot recover an account when you are signed out of both the phone and computer; in that case, follow the normal process to reset your Steam password and regain access.
Why does a simulator still ask for another account?
Signing in to Steam authenticates only your Steam account; it does not replace a separate publisher or platform login required by a game. Microsoft Flight Simulator editions sold through Steam can still request Microsoft or Xbox authentication, so use the dedicated MSFS 2024 Xbox connection fixes if the simulator stalls after Steam has signed in successfully.
