Compare the best HOTAS-compatible flight simulator games for civilian, modern combat and WWII flying, with platform and setup caveats.
The best HOTAS-compatible flight simulator games are DCS World for modern combat, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 for civilian flying, X-Plane 12 for flight-model depth and control flexibility, IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles for WWII combat, and Falcon BMS for a demanding F-16 simulation. War Thunder is the easier multiplayer choice.
Which HOTAS flight simulator should you choose?
The right simulator depends mainly on the aircraft and level of realism you want. A game can recognise a throttle and stick yet still be a poor HOTAS experience because of weak axis configuration, limited button assignments or console peripheral restrictions.
| Simulator | Best for | Why it works well with a HOTAS | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| DCS World | Modern military aircraft | Detailed axis tuning, modifiers and separate profiles for each aircraft module | Complex modules demand many buttons, head tracking or frequent keyboard use |
| Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 | Civilian and general aviation | Supports sticks, throttles, yokes, pedals and mixed-device configurations | Console players need approved hardware; control requirements vary greatly between aircraft |
| X-Plane 12 | Flight dynamics and flexible controls | Strong axis calibration, response curves and aircraft-specific profiles | Some third-party aircraft need extra command assignments |
| IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles | WWII fighters and bombers | Excellent match for stick, throttle, propeller and mixture controls | Rudder control matters much more than it does in most modern jets |
| Falcon BMS | F-16 systems and dynamic campaigns | Deep control mapping suited to replica or highly programmable HOTAS equipment | Steep setup and learning curve; ownership of Falcon 4.0 is required |
| War Thunder | Accessible online combat | Supports physical flight controls and a full-real control mode | Mouse aim dominates some modes, so a HOTAS is most useful in simulator-style play |
Choose DCS World if you want to master individual modern combat aircraft, but pick Falcon BMS if an F-16-focused dynamic campaign matters more than graphical polish. Our comparison of serious military simulators for PC covers the combat options in more detail.
For civilian flying, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 offers the broadest world and aircraft variety, while X-Plane 12 gives you especially flexible controller configuration across Windows, macOS and Linux. For a wider comparison spanning civilian, combat and WWII titles, see our breakdown of leading flight simulators available through Steam.
VTOL VR is a notable exception: it is designed around tracked VR hand controllers rather than a conventional physical HOTAS, so it is not our recommendation when hardware stick-and-throttle support is the requirement.
Will every HOTAS work with every flight simulator?
No. PC simulators usually accept a broad range of USB flight controllers, but automatic presets are not guaranteed and a separate stick and throttle may appear as two independent devices.
Xbox and PlayStation are stricter. The HOTAS must be licensed for that console family and supported by the game; sharing a USB connector does not make the PC, Xbox and PlayStation versions interchangeable. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, but the older Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 remains PC and Xbox only.
For specific platform distinctions, our Thrustmaster compatibility guidance for PC and Xbox explains why similarly named units may support different systems.
How should you configure a HOTAS for a flight simulator?
Start with the essential flight axes and remove conflicting automatic assignments before mapping secondary systems. A mistake we see constantly is pitch, roll or throttle being assigned to the HOTAS, a gamepad and another controller at the same time.
- Connect and verify the hardware. Plug in the stick, throttle and pedals before launching the simulator. Confirm that every axis moves through its full range in the operating system or manufacturer calibration utility.
- Clear duplicate assignments. Inspect every connected controller, including dormant gamepads. Remove unwanted pitch, roll, yaw and throttle bindings.
- Bind the primary axes first. Configure pitch, roll, yaw and throttle, then test them in a simple aircraft before assigning dozens of buttons.
- Check direction and centre. Invert any axis that moves backwards. Use the smallest dead zone that stops genuine centre jitter; large dead zones make precise formation flying and landings harder.
- Match the throttle range. Calibrate idle, military power, afterburner or reverse thrust where the simulator and hardware support detents. A throttle stuck at full power or entering reverse unexpectedly usually indicates an inverted axis or mismatched range.
- Create aircraft-specific profiles. A useful fighter mapping is rarely suitable for a twin-engine airliner or helicopter. Save or export profiles when the simulator provides that option.
Why does the aircraft move without input?
Uncommanded rolling, pitching or yawing normally comes from a duplicated assignment, an off-centre axis or electrical noise. Test one device at a time, clear the duplicate axis, then add a small dead zone only if the control still jitters.
If buttons work but an analogue control does not, check that it was assigned to the axis command rather than the similarly named increase/decrease commands. When a device disappears entirely, reconnect it to the same USB port, avoid an unpowered hub and restart the simulator with the controller already attached.
Do you need rudder pedals with a HOTAS?
Rudder pedals are optional for most fixed-wing flying if the stick has a twist axis, but they make helicopters, propeller aircraft, crosswind landings and ground handling substantially easier. Warbirds in IL-2 benefit especially because engine torque and differential braking require frequent, precise foot control.
A twist grip is adequate for learning modern jets and airliners. If you are building a complete setup, our guide to choosing PC flight controls explains when pedals, a yoke or a separate throttle add a meaningful advantage.
