Experience an iconic American trainer from World War II with this freeware simulation package featuring the Fairchild PT-26, initially developed by J.E. Narcizo and adapted for Microsoft Flight Simulator X with updates by Mark Rooks (RDG Aircraft). Painted in United States Navy markings, this release replicates the robust handling and dependable performance that helped prepare numerous WWII aviators for duty.

Primary Trainer Design and Background

The Fairchild PT-26, an evolution of the PT-19 series, served as a cornerstone for flight instruction during the 1940s. It came equipped with a Ranger in-line, air-cooled engine that ensured smooth power delivery and straightforward maintenance (the term “in-line engine” refers to a cylinder configuration arranged in a single row). More than 1,700 examples emerged from assembly lines across the United States, as well as Canada, produced by Fleet Aircraft, Ltd. Due to its forgiving flight characteristics, the PT-26 was a favorite for teaching fundamental flying techniques to new pilot cadets.

Visuals and Cockpit

This addon includes both 2D and fully realized 3D virtual cockpit panels that capture the authentic layout of the original trainer. Detailed textures showcase the US Navy’s exterior paint scheme, highlighting historical markings from that era. Users can also find a set of reference images illustrating the aircraft’s real-world operation, along with documented insight into PT-26 service history.

Installation Procedure

  1. Backup any original files you want to preserve.
  2. Extract (unzip) the downloaded archive to a convenient location on your system.
  3. Locate the folder named Fairchild PT26 U.S. NAVY.zip. Copy and place this folder into your main Aircraft directory. By default, this path is:
Windows OS default directory:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FSX\Sim Objects\Airplanes
  1. Ensure the unzipped aircraft folder includes these six items:
    • CFG
    • Airfile
    • Model
    • Sound
    • Panel
    • Texture
When complete, these six core components should remain together in the final install location.
  2. Extract the “gauges” folder and copy its contents into your FSX Gauges directory. By default, that can be found in:
    Windows OS default gauges path:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FSX\Gauges

Additional Notes

Once fully installed, the PT-26 can be selected from your aircraft roster within Microsoft Flight Simulator X. The included custom gauges and visual assets bring historical accuracy to your simulation environment. This release is completely freeware, providing both model and textures in a single download. If you have any requests or feedback, the creators—J.E. Narcizo and Mark “Fire Ball” Rooks—welcome community input.

Enjoy and explore the skies much like the WWII cadets who first took to the air in this venerable trainer.
