Learn how to set up Steam Offline Mode, which games work without internet, and how to fix login, update, launcher and cloud-save problems.
Steam Offline Mode lets you launch compatible, fully installed games without an internet connection. Sign in while online, allow Steam and each game to finish updating, launch each title once, then select Go Offline. Games needing online authentication, streamed content, multiplayer servers or a third-party launcher may still fail.
How do you set up Steam Offline Mode?
Prepare Offline Mode before disconnecting; waiting until you have lost internet is the mistake we see most often. Steam needs saved account credentials, while some games must complete activation and first-run installation separately.
- Sign in while connected. Let Steam remember the account on that computer. Do not sign out before travelling or disable saved credentials.
- Complete every download. Install the games, DLC, updates and Steam client restarts you may need. A partial or pending update can stop a game launching offline.
- Launch each game once. Reach its main menu so it can install supporting components, accept agreements, create configuration files and complete any publisher authentication.
- Download optional content. Store scenery, aircraft, language packs, maps and Workshop items locally. For example, Steam Offline Mode does not replace the separate preparation covered in our MSFS 2020 offline setup instructions.
- Enter Offline Mode. In the desktop client, open
Steam > Go Offline, confirm the prompt and let Steam restart. On Steam Deck, use the Offline Mode control under the Internet settings. - Test without a connection. Disable Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet, restart Steam in Offline Mode and launch every game you intend to use. This exposes third-party launcher and missing-content problems while you can still fix them.
If the connection has already failed, Steam may offer Start in Offline Mode when it detects saved credentials. If it instead demands a sign-in and the account was not cached on that computer, Offline Mode cannot be prepared retroactively.
What Steam games can you play without internet?
Offline compatibility is determined by each game as much as by Steam. Buying a title through Steam does not guarantee that its publisher launcher, anti-cheat system or game servers will operate offline.
| Game or feature | Offline result | Main condition |
|---|---|---|
| Installed single-player game | Usually works | All files and first-time activation must be complete |
| Split-screen, hot-seat or local play | Usually works | The mode must run entirely on the same computer |
| LAN multiplayer | Depends | Some games still use online accounts or internet lobby services |
| Downloaded DLC and Workshop mods | Depends | Files and licence data must already be stored locally |
| Games using another publisher launcher | Depends | That launcher may require its own offline preparation |
| MMOs, live-service games and online multiplayer | Usually unavailable | Remote authentication or game servers are required |
| Internet-streamed scenery, maps or other content | Unavailable or reduced | Only previously downloaded local content remains usable |
Temporary entitlements, subscriptions and games borrowed through library-sharing features are less dependable offline because their licences may need revalidation. Free single-player games can work, but only when the game itself does not depend on a server.
Which flight simulators work in Steam Offline Mode?
Locally installed simulators are generally the safest choices, but live weather, multiplayer networks, streamed scenery and account services disappear without internet.
- FSX: Steam Edition supports offline free flight, lessons, missions, AI traffic and built-in ATC once installed. Our guide to FSX single-player and multiplayer availability explains where the boundary lies.
- X-Plane can use locally installed aircraft, airports and scenery offline. Live weather, online flying, downloads and any web-based map services will not be available.
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 needs its own offline permissions and locally installed world data. Switching Steam itself offline is not sufficient.
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 relies heavily on streamed services and content, so it is a poor assumption that Steam Offline Mode will make the complete simulator available. Check the specific MSFS 2024 offline limitations before depending on it.
- DCS World uses separate account and module authorisation. Prepare its own offline access while connected; Steam's setting alone does not guarantee access to purchased modules.
Why won't a game launch in Steam Offline Mode?
Most failures come from incomplete preparation or a second authentication system outside Steam.
- Steam asks you to sign in: reconnect, sign in with saved credentials, then enter Offline Mode before disconnecting. Do not log out afterwards.
- The game says an update is required: reconnect and finish the update. Avoid verifying game files immediately before travelling unless you have time to replace anything Steam finds missing.
- A first-time setup window appears: launch the game online once and let it install required components or complete activation.
- A publisher launcher requests a login: enable that launcher's own offline option, if it provides one. Steam cannot bypass an external account or periodic DRM check.
- DLC, mods or scenery are missing: confirm that the actual files were downloaded rather than merely subscribed to or displayed in the library.
- Steam unexpectedly reports no connection: if internet access should be working, use our Steam connection troubleshooting steps before treating Offline Mode as the fix.
Will Steam saves and achievements work offline?
Local game saves normally work, but Steam Cloud cannot upload or download them until the connection returns. Before going offline, wait for cloud status to show that synchronisation has completed.
When reconnecting, Steam may report a cloud conflict. Compare the timestamps and choose the copy containing the progress you recognise; selecting the cloud version automatically can overwrite a newer local save. Achievement behaviour varies by game: some record achievements and synchronise them later, while others require an online session when the achievement is triggered.
Does Steam Offline Mode expire?
There is no dependable universal offline duration for every Steam game. Steam's cached account may continue working, but publisher DRM, subscription licences, shared-library access or changed account credentials can force another online check.
For an extended period without internet, reconnect shortly beforehand, update only when there is time to test afterwards, launch every required game, enter Offline Mode manually and perform one final disconnected test.
