This freeware scenery package overhauls Albany Airport (YABA) in Western Australia with meticulously reconstructed taxiways and newly placed structures. It also removes problematic vegetation around runway approaches and replaces a former gravel strip with an asphalt surface. Created by Roger’s Aussie Scenery, developed by Roger Leupold, this modification enhances realism and visual fidelity for virtual pilots who frequent this coastal airfield in Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
Refined Layout and Infrastructure
All taxiway edges have been reworked to better match accurate geospatial data. Hangars and related terminal buildings now stand in authentic locations, preserving realistic distances between parking stands. Developers have also addressed tree encroachments that once obstructed the runway thresholds, ensuring safer landings and improved approach visibility.
Runway Surface Improvements
The original gravel runway has been replaced with a detailed asphalt modeling. This transition allows for more robust aircraft operations, accommodating a variety of general aviation and charter aircraft. Pilots will notice improved textures that align with the airport’s actual conditions and layout as verified through resources like satellite imagery.
System Compatibility
Tests confirm stable performance on Windows 7 (64-bit) while using the FSX Acceleration expansion. The scenery is designed natively for Microsoft Flight Simulator X and should integrate seamlessly into custom scenery libraries. However, individual experiences may vary based on hardware and other installed add-ons.
Configuration and Integration Steps
- Remove any older versions of Albany Airport scenery from your setup. Then extract the newly downloaded Albany Airport folder into your existing “Addon Scenery” directory.
- Open the simulator, navigate to Settings followed by Scenery Library. Choose Add Area, locate the fresh Albany scenery folder within “Addon Scenery”, and confirm your selection.
Alignment with Real-World References
The developer, Roger Leupold, harnessed Google Earth data to ensure each runway marking and structure placement matches true-to-life coordinates. This attention to detail gives a highly accurate depiction of the airport’s appearance from above and on the ground.
Performance Tip
For those seeking a more fluid experience, temporarily disabling antivirus software during simulator sessions can free up resources, which may help maintain higher frame rates.
