This freeware enhancement offers a carefully refined rendition of Hamburg Airport (EDDH) in Germany, conceived specifically for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It allows the user to choose between operating the crosswind runway configuration or adhering to the airport’s default layout. Ray Smith is the creator of this project, and he has meticulously applied the latest Airport Design Editor techniques to fine-tune ground markings, allocate more parking, and refine vehicle access for a genuinely improved experience.
Key Airport Features and Technical Improvements
- Crosswind Activation (Optional): One file enables simultaneous use of both main and crosswind runways (typically 05/23 and 15/33) for landings and departures.
- Revised Parking: Expanded parking and gate assignments accommodate a greater volume of AI traffic, reducing congestion during busy periods.
- Taxiway and Road Upgrades: Ground vehicle routes have been reconstructed alongside upgraded taxiway signage and path alignments.
- Additional Control Tower View: In tower view, you can observe activities from the recreated vantage point of the new control tower placement.
Runway Configuration Files
Ray Smith has included three BGL files:
- EDDH_ADE_RS.BGL
- Mirrors default runway usage on the main strip.
- EDDH_ADE_CW_RS.BGL
- Implements crosswind operations, enabling both runways for concurrent service.
- EDDH_ADE_OBJ.BGL
- Contains the necessary object data to finalize the new layout within the simulator.
All other refinements, such as gate allocation, are the same in both runway operation versions. Keep in mind that if you activate the crosswind setup, ATIS will read off the fictional “fake” runways in conjunction with the actual ones.
Installation Steps
- Remove or overwrite any older files associated with EDDH from this developer. Keeping duplicates could cause conflicts.
- Choose exactly one of the following files and place it in your Flight Simulator X/Addon Scenery/scenery folder:
- EDDH_ADE_RS.BGL (if you want the default runway plan)
- EDDH_ADE_CW_RS.BGL (if you intend to enable crosswind usage)
- Put the EDDH_ADE_OBJ.BGL file into Microsoft Flight Simulator X/Scenery/Global/scenery.
- Start the simulator and observe the new layout in place.
Additional Notes
- Ensure that no other AFCAD or AI traffic tool has installed conflicting data for EDDH, as that can disrupt gate assignments or traffic flow.
- To remove this airport enhancement, simply delete the corresponding BGL files, and the simulator will revert to its stock Hamburg Airport layout.
Hamburg Airport offers extensive domestic and international operations and is situated relatively close to central Hamburg. With this update by Ray Smith, sim pilots benefit from more accurate stands, smoother taxiing routes, and an improved ground layout worthy of the real-world northern German hub.
