Create and edit Train Simulator Classic consists for Quick Drive or scenarios, with steps for missing stock, orientation and compatibility problems.
To create a train consist in Train Simulator Classic, open the Consist Editor, start a new custom Quick Drive consist, add a driveable locomotive and compatible vehicles in order, set their orientation, then name and save it. Edit saved custom consists there; trains belonging to individual scenarios must be changed in the Scenario Editor.
How do I create a custom Quick Drive consist?
Use the Consist Editor when you want a reusable formation that can be selected for Quick Drive. Menu wording varies slightly between interface revisions, but the editor is normally under Build; some layouts also expose custom consist tools through the Quick Drive train selector.
- Start a new consist. Choose the option to create a new custom formation and give it a distinct name. Avoid reusing the name of a supplied train.
- Select the locomotive. Find the driveable engine or cab car in the rolling-stock browser and add it at the intended driving end.
- Add coaches or wagons in order. Build the formation from one end to the other. Steam locomotives usually need their matching tender, while multiple units should retain the correct driving, motor and trailer-car arrangement.
- Check vehicle direction. Use the editor's reverse or flip control where a coach, wagon, tender or rear cab faces the wrong way. The arrows or coupler ends in the preview help reveal reversed stock.
- Save and test it. Select the custom formation in Quick Drive and use a suitable route. Check that the intended cab is active, the brakes release, couplers remain attached and the whole train fits the starting location.

How do I edit an existing consist?
Open the Consist Editor, select the formation from your custom-consist list and choose its edit option. You can remove vehicles, insert different stock, change the order or reverse individual vehicles before saving.
Some supplied Quick Drive formations cannot be edited directly because they are packaged PreLoad blueprints rather than user-created consists. If no edit option appears, create a new custom consist using the same stock instead of changing the packaged blueprint. Manual blueprint edits can be overwritten by an add-on update and may leave the train unusable if a referenced asset changes.
A saved consist contains references to rolling-stock assets; it does not copy those assets into the consist. Removing an add-on, changing its files or sharing the consist without its dependencies will therefore produce missing vehicles or prevent the formation from loading.
Are Quick Drive and scenario consists the same?
Quick Drive custom consists are reusable formations, while scenario consists belong to one particular scenario and must be edited there.

How do I change a consist inside a scenario?
Clone the scenario first, then edit the copy so the original remains intact. This is especially sensible for Career scenarios, Workshop content and scenarios supplied with a route.
- Open the route's scenario list and clone the scenario you want to modify.
- Load the copy in the Scenario Editor and unlock editing if the scenario is protected.
- Select the player, AI or static consist and add, remove, replace or reverse its vehicles.
- Confirm that the driver marker remains attached to the intended locomotive and that its instructions still refer to valid stops, portals and destinations.
- Save the scenario and test it from the beginning rather than resuming an old save.

Why is rolling stock missing from the consist editor?
Missing stock usually comes down to an active browser filter, an unavailable dependency or content that was not made for Train Simulator Classic.
- Clear the stock filters. Check traction type, region, operator and other collection filters before assuming an asset is absent.
- Enable the correct provider and product. This chiefly affects the Scenario Editor, where assets may stay hidden until their provider/product set is enabled.
- Check ownership and installation. A downloaded consist may reference a locomotive, coach pack or reskin whose base DLC is not installed.
- Distinguish vehicles from Quick Drive formations. An add-on may provide usable rolling stock without supplying its own Quick Drive preload. You may still be able to assemble the vehicles manually.
- Confirm simulator compatibility. Microsoft Train Simulator stock cannot be placed directly into Train Simulator Classic. Use add-ons explicitly made for the RailWorks/Train Simulator Classic asset system.
When adding third-party stock, use our checks for compatible and safely packaged Train Simulator Classic add-ons. Clearing the blueprint cache can refresh a stale asset list, but it cannot replace a missing base model or DLC dependency.
What makes a Train Simulator Classic consist compatible?
A workable consist needs compatible couplings and brakes, a driveable lead vehicle, the correct formation for scripted multiple units, and a route that supports its power system.
- Couplings: visually similar vehicles can use different coupling blueprints or scripts and may separate under load.
- Brakes: mixing incompatible air, vacuum or specialised stock can leave part of the train unbraked or prevent a proper brake release.
- Power supply: an electric locomotive needs compatible electrification, while some cab cars depend on a matching powered unit.
- Formation order: EMUs, DMUs and push-pull sets often rely on a particular sequence of driving, motor and trailer vehicles.
- Train length: a formation that works mechanically may still overhang platforms, foul junctions or exceed a Quick Drive spawn point.
Test a newly created consist on a simple Quick Drive service before using it in a complex scenario. If it fails, remove the last vehicle added and test again; that isolates coupling, brake and dependency problems far faster than rebuilding the entire formation.
