Editorial

As a fan of the real P-51D aircraft I was really looking forward to downloading this package as soon as it came on the market. Given that it was supposed to revolutionize the way that the old aircraft would handle itself in FS2004, I was keen to see whether or not it would live up to this hype and give me the deeply impressive aircraft that I was hoping to see.

Preview screenshot

I’m very happy to report that it most certainly does! Even on a dated simulator such as FS2004. This still looks very impressive and carries that specific charm that made me love the real thing.

Made by GMax

First off, given that this is still created by GMax to put together the whole image, the limitations are very hard to spot. We use much more powerful software today (mostly) but this is a wonderful attempt when using GMax to put it all together. I was very impressed with the overall level of realism and general attention to quality and depth that has been included across the board here.

As far as getting to enjoy yourself and understand the incredible precision that it brought to the table, this model looks just as it should.

Super Speed

Given that this is built upon the fastest prop that you are likely to find in the sky, this feels excellent to fly and fair to move around with. It’s got incredible pace for an aircraft and made me feel like I was flying around at double speed! It was very nippy and as an aircraft, it feels like an incredible amount of fun to be a part of.

One other thing that I would like to bring up, though, is the fact that this is all very realistic. As an aircraft in real-life this is exceptionally fast – too fast, some might say – so it’s captured here very well. It feels a bit chaotic and mad at times but for me that was what I was hoping for. In short, I was hugely recommend this aircraft if you want to effectively feel like you are flying a Go-Kart with wings!

I was very impressed with the attention to detail and the appreciation of the real thing here. Many mods veer off too much to the other side, and it feels like you’re flying something fake. This mod avoids that pitfall with elegance and ease, making something that really does feel like the true thing.

With repaints and flight dynamics as realistic as one another, this makes a fine selection for anyone who wants to enjoy the P-51D without having to pay for it or compromise on realism, quality or overall performance levels.
