- Identify the exact variant. Read the supplied manual or checklist and record its published speeds, flap limits, fuel arrangement and engine controls. A Warrior, Arrow and Turbo Arrow share a family name but do not use interchangeable procedures.
- Check every control binding. Confirm throttle, mixture, propeller, brakes, rudder and landing-gear assignments where applicable. Duplicate controller bindings often appear to be aircraft handling faults.
- Start under controlled conditions. Use a familiar airport, daylight, light wind and a loading comfortably inside the permitted envelope. This isolates the aircraft’s behaviour from weather and weight problems.

Move to a retractable single after you can manage a faster fixed-gear aircraft without falling behind its checklist. A sensible route is C172 to PA-28 Warrior, then fixed-gear C182, followed by an Arrow or C182 RG; FSX pilots can use this retractable Cessna step-up model for the later stage.
A twin adds engine-out handling and a much faster flow of decisions, while a jet adds energy management, automation modes and pressurised-aircraft procedures. Neither is prohibited as an immediate simulator choice, but jumping straight from the C172 often teaches button sequences before aircraft management.
What if your goal is airline flying?
You do not need to master every piston aircraft before trying an airliner. Once you can hand-fly accurately, follow checklists and conduct a stable instrument approach, moving to a turboprop or regional jet is reasonable; use a complex single or light twin first if managing speed, descent planning and systems still feels rushed.
